Image: Peterson: I want to clear up the controversy by knocking Khan outBy William Mackay: Amir Khan may not have to wait long to get his rematch with IBF/WBA light welterweight champion Lamont Peterson, because Peterson says he wants to fight Khan and shut him up by knocking him out this time around.

Before Peterson fights Khan, he wants to make sure that it’s the best possible choice he can make in terms of money. Right now, Peterson is being considered as an opponent for WBO welterweight champion Manny Pacquiao for his next fight in 2012. Obviously a fight with Pacquiao is a much better option for Peterson than a rematch with Khan. Peterson could make as much as three times the offer that was given to him by Khan’s promoters at Golden Boy.

Peterson told the mirror.co.uk “I want to clear everything up, even though I think I won a clear victory. I think that I can knock Amir out. I don’t want any more dispute about it and the best way to do that is by winning by a knockout. And I think I can do it.”

There’s no question that a rematch between Peterson and Khan would be a much different fight. Khan is saying he wouldn’t move as much and would take the fight to Peterson, and Peterson says he wouldn’t wait so long like he did last time before attacking Khan to try and knock him out. It is interesting that Khan wants to try and slug with Peterson the next time around because Peterson was the stronger fighter when Khan did try and go toe-to-toe with him in the 4th round.

That was really the only round of the fight where Khan tried to punch with Peterson. The first two rounds, Khan was throwing flurries but moving a lot. In the 3rd, Peterson opened up with some good shots but Khan was still moving. It was the 4th where Khan decided to punch with Peterson and Khan took a real beating in the round. From then on, Khan was running and fouling for the remainder of the fight.

Peterson said “In the New Year, we [he and his trainer] will sit down and talk, but I want my next fight to be against Amir.”

It’s kind of no-brainer that the best fight out there, other than the Pacquiao bout, is against Khan. But Peterson needs to make sure the referee and judges are working the fight because if it’s a referee that will turn his head when Khan’s fouling, Peterson’s goose will be cooked. Moreover, if a referee works the fight similar to the one that was working the Khan vs. Marcos Maidana fight last year in December, Peterson may be unable to work on the inside without having the action broken up every time he tries to work inside.
