Khan: It’s the best time to catch Mayweather – after he gets out of jail

Image: Khan: It's the best time to catch Mayweather - after he gets out of jailBy William Mackay: Amir Khan was just exposed by Lamont Peterson in a 12 round decision loss, yet Khan still is talking about wanting a fight against Floyd Mayweather Jr. and sees the loss to Peterson as just a momentary blip in his career.

Khan thinks that Mayweather’s 90 day jail sentence will hurt him physically in terms of his boxing skills and Khan feels that this is the best time to fight Mayweather right after he emerges from jail.

Speaking to the BBC Sport, Khan said “I think this is the best time to catch him [Mayweather]. He’s making a lot of mistakes now. He’s doing a lot of things wrong in the street as well. This is the best time to catch him while his hands are low. I know I have the style to beat him, and styles make fights. I know I have the skills to beat him. If the fight is judged fairly, I’ll definitely get the win over Mayweather. I think it [jail] will affect anyone. It’s the best time to catch him.”

I can’t help thinking of how unsporting Khan sounds. I mean where is the victory in beating someone when they’re not at full capacity? It sounds rather sad to me. I’ve heard Khan say this kind of thing before about fighting Mayweather; about how it’s about getting the fight at the right time when he’s on the downside of his career and Khan is moving up. But wanting to fight a guy immediately after he gets out of jail so you can get an advantage? That seems so wrong to me. Doesn’t Khan have enough confidence in his skills that he can beat Mayweather when he’s at his best?

Why would Khan want to fight Mayweather when he’s in a weakened state? That’s like getting an award when your opponent is sick or something. How do you feel good about that? If you’re into just having a name on your resume, then I guess it’s good. But if you want a win that actually has some meaning to it, then how do you feel good about beating someone who is coming off of a 90 day jail term?

This is kind of neither here nor there, though, because Khan isn’t going to get a fight with Mayweather immediately after gets out, so it’s kind of ridiculous that Khan is dreaming of it. He’s still got to fight Lamont Peterson again and hope he doesn’t get whipped again. Khan needs to be hoping he can win that fight, because I don’t know how Khan can win it unless he fouls Peterson even more than he did last time with his pulling down on his head and shoving him around the ring all night.

I honestly don’t think Khan could even beat Mayweather if he were coming off a year-long prison sentence. Mayweather is so much better than Khan in every area. Mayweather can fight on the inside.
