Image: Frankie Gavin Walks out of Horta FightBy Shaun Campbell: Former amateur world champion Frankie Gavin has reportedly walked away from his proposed upcoming fight against French welterweight Frank Horta. Gavin apparently went to the house of his former trainer and close friend Anthony Farnell and told him that he was pulling out. It makes you wonder what on earth is going through Gavin’s mind, but he is clearly shutting himself away from the public as he had left London and returned to his hometown of Birmingham. His personal facebook page that “Funtime” Frankie would often update has also vanished.

Promoter Frank Warren is reportedly furious with the lack of professionalism of one of his hottest prospects. The Birmingham man has been fighting at 147 recently and performing average at best. His safety first style has not won over the fans, and after his split decision win over Curtis Woodhouse, maybe Gavin is realizing he’s not quite as good as he though he was.

After defeating Woodhouse, Gavin said that he knew he wasn’t performing well and that he would move down to light-welterweight. Then it was announced that he would defend his WBO intercontinental welterweight title. Clearly he either can not, or more likely can not be bothered to make the light-welterweight limit. It’s unbelievably frustrating as many saw Gavin as the best prospect of the Olympian’s to turn profession a few years ago. Many believed that while James Degale, Billy Joe Saunders, David Price, and Joe Murray were all destined for great things, Frankie Gavin would be something special. But it appears he has thrown it all away now. A wasted talent. Personally, I do not believe we will see Funtime Frankie in a boxing ring again.
