By Jim Dower: WBA World flyweight champion Hernan Marquez (32-2, 25 KO’s) once again stopped Luis Concepcion (23-3, 18 KO’s), this time in the 1s round last Saturday night at the Centro de Usos Multiples, Hermosillo, Sonora, Mexico. Marquez, 23, dropped Concepcion three times before the referee Rafael Ramos finally halted the fight.

Last time Marquez fought Concepcion the two fighters battled hard in a back and forth fight until Marquez stopped Concepcion in the 11th. This time it was much easier for Marquez because Concepcion kept foolishly walking into shots after getting hurt. The fight ended with Marquez landing a powerful left counter shot after had thrown a right hand.

Concepcion started out the fight looking strong taking the fight to Marquez and landing a lot of hard right hands. Marquez just took the shots and constantly gave up real estate without throwing anything back. When Marquez finally did let his hands go, he hurt Concepcion with a hard right hand. Marquez immediately followed the fight with a huge left hook the head that put Concepcion down on the canvas.

After Concepcion got back to his feet, he continued to attack Marquez as if nothing had happened. There was no holding on or anything despite the clear indication that Concepcion was still shaken up from the knockdown. Concepcion backed Marquez up with right hands, but was dropped for a second time when Marquez unloaded with one of his own powerful right hands to the head.

Concepcion immediately charged forward and tagged Marquez with a nice right hand, but Marquez landed a left counter a split second after Concepcion’s right hand that put Concepcion on the canvas for the third and final time in the fight. The referee then stopped the fight.

In hindsight, Conception may have been able to survive the round had he backed off and fought defensively after the first knockdown. The way he fought instead seemed to be the textbook version of how you shouldn’t fight after getting hurt. Concepcion is a five-year pro but he has a lot still to learn if he wants to be successful. As it is, this is now Concepcion’s second knockout loss in his last three fights.
