Image: Khan wants to fight Mayweather in England in 2012By William Mackay: WBA light welterweight champion Amir Khan is once again talking about fighting Floyd Mayweather Jr., and wants to fight him in the UK in 2012. Khan, speaking with Sky Sports News, says he wants the fight to take place in Wembley Stadium and thinks they can sell it out. Khan, however, still has at least one, maybe two more fights before that date. Depending on who he faces, he might not make it to a Mayweather fight.

The list of possible opponents for Khan’s next fight are as follows: Lamont Peterson, Erik Morales, Robert Guerrero, Lucas Matthysse and Marcos Maidana. Khan has already said that he’d be interested in facing Morales. Unfortunately, Morales is fighting Matthysse on September 17th, and the chances are high that Morales will lose that fight. That will take a lot of wind out of Khan’s sails because he would then have to pick from Peterson, Matthysse, Guerrero and Maidana. Khan will likely take the weakest puncher of the bunch, Peterson.

Khan said this to Sky Sports News HD: “Floyd is a fight that – in the next 12 months – could happen. And to bring that fight to the UK. Floyd has said that he would want to fight in Wembley Stadium – what a huge fight that would be. I’m sure with someone like Floyd and myself, it would be a sell out.”

If Khan picks the light hitting Peterson, he’ll get to the Mayweather fight. If he fights Maidana, Matthysse or Guerrero, Khan will get beat. He won’t fight any of those guys. Look for Khan to take the safe pick and suddenly show interested in Peterson, who isn’t as popular as the other guys, but Khan will fight him anyway.

“I think there’s only one more fight in this division, because it is so hard for me to get fights at 140 pounds.”

It’s not hard to get fights. Breidis Prescott, who knocked Khan out in one round, and Maidana are both ready to fight Khan, but he doesn’t want to fight them for some reason. I wonder why? Khan needs to rephrase it as ‘It’s hard to find guys that aren’t a risk to knock me out. I need to move up.’

Khan will lose to Mayweather but get a big payday. Hopefully, Khan doesn’t lose all his ambition like fellow Brit David Haye and retire with his bundle of money after the Mayweather loss. I really don’t see a lot of fights that Khan can win at welterweight. He would need to avoid Victor Ortiz, Mike Jones and Andre Berto if he wants to find success at welterweight. They hit too hard and would expose his weak chin.
