DeGale could spar with Bellew, Cleverly and Daniel Jacobs to prepare for Wilczewski bout

By Scott Gilfoid: Super middleweight talent James DeGale (10-1, 8 KO’s) is reportedly considering flying to Los Angeles, California to get in some sparring with middleweight contender Daniel Jacobs to help the 25-year-old DeGale get prepared for his upcoming September or October fight against European Boxing Union (EBU) super middleweight champion Piotr Wilczewski (29-1, 10 KO’s).

There still isn’t a specific date for the DeGale-Wilczewski fight. In the meantime, DeGale is looking to get in the best sparring possible to get ready for the fight.

In addition to sparring with Jacobs, DeGale is also reportedly considering some sparring with World Boxing Organization (WBO) light heavyweight champion Nathan Cleverly and No.15 ranked WBO contender Tony Bellew.

“I’ve got some options over here, and I could work with Tony Bellew and Nathan Cleverly, both of whom I have sparred with before,” DeGale said to frankwarren.tv. “But I could also go to the States as well, may be for a week or 10 days, and do some sparring out there.”

DeGale would be much better off sparring with the Dirrell brothers – Andre and Anthony Dirrell. Those are two of the best fighters in the super middleweight division and the future of the division. If DeGale wants to get better in a real hurry, he’ll spar with those two talents. The time spent sparring with the Dirrell brothers will be much more valuable than sparring with the plodding Bellew and Cleverly.

The sparring with Jacobs will teach DeGale a few things, but he’s not in the same class as the Dirrell brothers in overall talent. That’s the way that I would go if I were promoting DeGale. He shouldn’t waste his time with Cleverly and Bellew. All that will do is teach DeGale things that won’t be useful for him when he eventually takes on the better fighters in the division.
