Image: Klitschko manager: No Haye-Wladimir rematch; Haye vs. Vitali is possibleBy Sean McDaniel: If former WBA heavyweight champion David Haye wants to fight one of the Klitschko brothers again he’s going to have to settle for the huge 6’7″ WBC heavyweight champion Vitali Klitschko next and not a rematch with IBF/WBA/WBO heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko, says Wladimir’s manager Bernd Boente.

Boente says that the fight was too one-sided for there to be a rematch involved and he’s not buying Haye’s excuse about having a broken toe. Boente says that Wladimir will go after the winner of this months fight in the UK between Tyson Fury and Dereck Chisora.

In an interview at the BBC Sport, Boente said that Vitali said at the press conference that he would like to fight Haye and knock him out.

However, the fight will likely have to take place next year because Vitali has a fight against Tomasz Adamek in September. The only way that the fight could happen this year is if Vitali knocks out Adamek in one or two rounds without getting hit. That’s a possibility but there would still need to be time to promote a Vitali vs. Haye fight and it would not be reasonable to try and squeeze it in before Haye’s promised retirement date on October 13th of this year. If Haye wants the Vitali fight he will have to stick around longer into the start of 2012 and face him then. Haye isn’t exactly in the drivers seat now after his loss to Wladimir, and he’s going to have to take what he can and that likely includes a smaller cut of the revenue with Vitali you would have to think.

Haye is blaming his loss to Wladimir, in part, to him having a broken toe. Boente says that’s not the reason why Haye lost to Wladimir. He lost because he was beaten by a better fighter. It’s going to be hard for Haye to campaign for a rematch with Wladimir because of so few boxing fans buying the broken toe excuse as the reason for Haye’s one-sided 12 round decision loss to Wladimir.

It’s unclear whether Haye will be interested in facing Vitali, because Haye didn’t seem eager to face the steel-chinned Vitali, who fights a lot different from his brother Wladimir. Vitali would be going after Haye from the round one throwing power shots and not jabs. It would be the slug-fest that Haye had wanted for the Wladimir fight but the wrong opponent. It’s doubtful Haye would last long against Vitali and it’s going to be interesting to see if Haye has enough confidence to take the fight.
