Image: Segura destroys Zuniga in one round; Vazquez stops AguilarBy Eric Thomas: In a night of mismatches, WBA/WBO light flyweight champion Giovanni Segura (28-1-1, 24 KO’s) destroyed a badly over-matched journeyman Eddy Zuniga (7-6-1, 1 KO’s) in a 1st round blowout last Saturday night in a non-title bout held at flyweight at the Musica hall, in Toluca, Mexico. Segura, 29, knocked the unknown Zuniga down twice with hard right uppercuts to the head.

After the second knockdown, the fight was stopped at 2:58 of the 1st. Zuniga was in no shape to continue fighting, as he staggered when he did finally get up. This was the first fight for Sugura since destroying Ivan Calderon for a second time last April in a 3rd round TKO. The Calderon-Segura rematch was an odd one, because the first fight was such a one-sided fight with Sugura easily winning by a 7th round stoppage.

There really wasn’t any point in a second Calderon fight. And as far as last night’s fight, it’s very rare for top champions like Segura to fight guys as poor as Zuniga. That’s just very, very rarely done and it’s unclear why Segura was put in such a bad mismatch like this with boxing fans paying to see it. It’s not like Segura was coming off of a loss, a long lay off or an injury. Zuniga came into the fight with three straight losses and had no chance whatsoever to win. It was a record padding fight but that could hardly have been of any help to improving Segura for his next fight.

In another mismatch on the card, International Boxing Federation (IBF) lightweight champion Miguel Vazquez (29-3, 13 KO’s) destroyed journeyman Marlon Aguilar (25-11-1, 18 KO’s) by a 2nd round TKO. Vazquez, a very good fighter, dominated the 1st round with hooks and nice body shots. In the 2nd round, Vazquez ended matters with a hard body shot. The fight was officially stopped at 1:46 of the 2nd round.
