Kevin Mitchell ready for Vazquez if he beats Maduma on Saturday

mitchell57By Scott Gilfoid: Kevin Mitchell (37-2, 27 KO’s) has an important match-up on Saturday night against #4 IBF Ghislain Maduma (16-0, 10 KO’s) in an IBF lightweight title eliminator with the winner getting a crack at IBF lightweight champion Miguel Vazquez (34-3, 13 KO’s). Mitchell thinks he’s ready for that fight, but the problem is he’s fighting a guy that may prove to be impossible to beat in Maduma.

The basic problem that Mitchell has is Maduma is faster, stronger and a better boxer than him. Maduma appears to be superior to Mitchell in every category you can name except for experience, as Mitchell definitely has a clear advantage in that area. But for the most part, Mitchell’s experience against better fighters have been mostly negative, so you have to wonder whether his experience has actually helped him.

Mitchell lost to Ricky Burns, he lost to Michael Katsidis, and he arguably lost to Breidis Prescott. Mitchell’s only real clear cut win over a contender was his victory over John Murray, who has since been exposed by Brandon Rios and Anthony Crolla.

“After this, Vazquez is in my sights and what a platform to do it,” Mitchell said to Sky Sports. “It’s the biggest show in history, it can’t get bigger. It’s a no lose thing. I’ve spent a whole year in training, and I’ve made my comeback properly and trained solidly. I’m fine for this fight. I’ve seen quite a few fights of his [Maduma]. He’s a good fighter with fast hands. He likes to do things his own way. I imagine he’ll be very fit for this fight. I think it’s going to be a war. I’ve been in some wars and I’ve been beaten in 2 of them. But I wasn’t prepared for them. But I’m prepared now. I’m ready and I have what it takes.”

I really hate to say it, but I don’t know that Mitchell can get passed a talent like Maduma. This guy can do it all, and I think he’s going to be a utter nightmare for Mitchell to fight on Saturday at Wembley Stadium. Maduma has more power and speed than Katsidis and Burns, and we saw what those guys were able to do to Mitchell.
