Miguel Vazquez wants Adrien Broner next

(Photo credit: Ryan Greene/Premier Boxing Champions) By Patrick McHugh: In a lackluster performance, former IBF lightweight champion Miguel Vazquez (36-5, 13 KOs) had to struggle hard to beat 2nd tier welterweight Erick Bone (16-4, 8 KOs) by a close 10 round unanimous decision last Saturday night on Premier Boxing Champions at the Cowboys Dancehall in San Antonio, Texas.

After the fight, Vazquez, said he wants to fight former four division world champion Adrien Broner next. It’s unclear why Broner would want to fight Vazquez because he’s ranked in the top 15 at light welterweight and he’s lost two out of his last four fights.

Mickey Bey: I learned from the John Molina fight

MICKEY BEY, Lightweight Contender

“The world title fight for me is huge and it just shows that being patient and doing the hard work pays off. I’ve had a lot of interruptions but you just have to stay patient, stick with it without losing focus, training hard and never think about quitting or giving up.

“It’s gonna be a big night on Sept. 13. It’s been about a year’s wait for me, but look at that as a positive because it gave me more time to perfect my craft. I had so many breaks with no fights, but I just had to stay dedicated, keep looking at it as a positive thing, and keep learning.

Kevin Mitchell ready for Vazquez if he beats Maduma on Saturday

mitchell57By Scott Gilfoid: Kevin Mitchell (37-2, 27 KO’s) has an important match-up on Saturday night against #4 IBF Ghislain Maduma (16-0, 10 KO’s) in an IBF lightweight title eliminator with the winner getting a crack at IBF lightweight champion Miguel Vazquez (34-3, 13 KO’s). Mitchell thinks he’s ready for that fight, but the problem is he’s fighting a guy that may prove to be impossible to beat in Maduma.

The basic problem that Mitchell has is Maduma is faster, stronger and a better boxer than him. Maduma appears to be superior to Mitchell in every category you can name except for experience, as Mitchell definitely has a clear advantage in that area. But for the most part, Mitchell’s experience against better fighters have been mostly negative, so you have to wonder whether his experience has actually helped him.

Kevin Mitchell vs. Ghislain Maduma in IBF 135lb eliminator on 5/31, winner faces Miguel Vazquez

mitchell4554By Scott Gilfoid: #5 IBF Kevin Mitchell (37-2, 27 KO’s) will be trying to set himself up for another world title shot when he faces unbeaten #4 IBF Ghislain Maduma (16-0, 10 KO’s) next month in an IBF lightweight eliminator bout on May 31st at the Wembley Stadium in London, UK. The winner of the Mitchell-Maduma fight will be the mandatory for IBF lightweight champion Miguel Vazquez, and will find themselves in a very, very tough fight.

Mitchell, 29, already had a shot at a world title two years ago when he challenged former WBO lightweight champion Ricky Burns for his WBO strap, but Mitchell was blown out quickly in four one-sided rounds in what you can basically call a massacre. Previous to that, Mitchell tried to step it up against WBO interim lightweight champion Michael Katsidis in May of 2010, but unfortunately Mitchell was destroyed in that fight too in losing a 3rd round TKO.
