By Joe Gorman: Tonight young southpaw prospect (Funtime) Frankie Gavin (10- 0, 8KO’s) took a step up and beat former British champion Young Mutley (29-6, 14KO’s) by a 12 round unanimous decision to take the WBO inter-continental welterweight title. In a 12 round bout at the 02 arena, Greenwich, London, the score cards were; 119-109, 119-109, 119-109.

New welterweight prospect Gavin went about his work in a very professional manor, keeping his distance and landing hard effective shots. Looking classy making few mistakes and controlling the fight with a good stiff jab, Frankie Gavin had his opponent completely confused and he was able to do what he wanted. Unfortunately Mutley was making it a boring fight trying to box and counter Gavin instead of engaging with him. This was not an exiting boxing match. However, it showed that Gavin can deal with an awkward style.

In the late stages of the 4th round, Gavin cut Mutley’s eye with a right hook which made Mutley a bit hesitant of walking straight into him. In the longest fight of the young prospects career, Gavin showed that he can go the distance. After this impressive performance Gavin now is looking to go on to tougher challenges in the future. In post fight interview, Gavin said he was not happy with his performance and he claims he was ill and he fought anyway. He wanted to fight at welterweight in future and he is happy to have 12 round experience.

The most interesting event of the fight was a fight that broke out between British heavyweight champion Dereck Chisora and Tyson Fury in the crowd in the 8th and 9th round. The audience was paying more attention to this than the actual fight. This is interesting because this will only make these to Heavyweight prospects want to get in the ring as soon as possible and sort out there dispute where it matters.

In other action on the card:

Jamie Cox TKO 3 Marcus Portman
Paul Smith TKO 1 Jozsef Matolcsi
Billy Joe Saunders TKO 2 Kevin Hammond
Nicky Cook TKO 6 Youssef Al Hamidi
