Maidana open to a rematch with Ortiz as long as the money is right

By Dan Ambrose: If WBC welterweight champion Victor Ortiz (29-2-2, 22 KO’s) wants a rematch with Marcos Maidana (30-2, 27 KO’s) he has the perfect opportunity now. Maidana is saying that’s interested in fighting Ortiz again as long as the money is right. Speaking with the examiner.com, Maidana said “I will face him again, provided that I get a convenient offer of course. But now he is in the 147pound division and that could be an obstacle.”

Two years ago Maidana stopped Ortiz in the 6th round in a fight in which Ortiz knocked Maidana down three times and was knocked down two times himself. The fight was halted after Ortiz went down in the 6th and got up covered with blood. It looked like Ortiz didn’t want to continue to fight that night. To his credit, Ortiz went a long ways towards redeeming himself after beating Andre Berto by a 12 round decision last weekend.

Ortiz was knocked down two times by Berto but refused to quit and continued to take the fight to Berto until the very end. Ortiz now is in the position to pick and choose the best fight opportunities. A rematch with Berto is one possibility for him. HBO would love to see that fight, but Miadana is another one. That would be a great fight as well, maybe even better than the Berto rematch because Maidana would never stop coming forward and wouldn’t spend time fighting on the ropes like Berto did.

It is worrisome that Maidana is saying that Ortiz fighting at welterweight would be a problem for him. Why should be a problem? It’s only seven pounds of weight. Depending on how heavy Ortiz is after re-hydrating. If he’s not in the 160s, Maidana should have a good chance of beating Ortiz again.
