Marcos Maidana looking solid in training for comeback

By Jeff Aronow: Marcos Maidana continues to drop weight as he trains for his comeback fight, and he looks like he’s now close to his old weight. The former two-division world champion Maidana (35-5, 31 KOs) was previously scheduled to fight 47-year-old Argentinian kickboxer Jorge Acero Cali in a five-round bout at a catchweight of 187 pounds.

Unfortunately for the 36-year-old Maidana, the pandemic has temporarily disrupted his plans to fight Cali. In just one month, Maidana appeared to have taken off a lot of weight since the last training video of him last April. If Maidana keeps losing weight, he’ll be too light to fight the heavyweight Cali.

Maidana is doing a nice job of losing weight. A year ago, when Maidana first started training, he looked huge, and some believed that it was an impossible task for him to lose all the weight. Well, it’s taken Maidana a year, and he looks like he’s capable of making the 147-pound limit if he wants to.

Maidana should target Broner and Mayweather

It might be better for Maidana to skip the Cali fight altogether, and instead focus on returning to boxing to face Adrien Broner or Floyd Mayweather Jr. in rematches. Maidana’s net worth is estimated at $4 million, according to Celebrity Net Worth. If Maidana came back to fight Broner or Floyd, he could get a nice payday.

There would be a lot of interest from boxing fans in a Mayweather vs. Maidana trilogy fight. And Maidana gave Mayweather a lot of problems in their two fight, and he arguably beat ‘Money’ in their first contest in May 2014. Maidana fought Mayweather at a higher level than UFC star Conor McGregor.

Maidana beat Broner by a one-sided 12 round unanimous decision in December 2013. The victory for Maidana opened the door to him getting two fights against Mayweather.

At the time, Broner was viewed as a Mayweather protege, who was seen by some as the next pay-per-view star to carry the sport. When Maidana beat Broner, it seemed to strike a nerve with Mayweather, who chose not only to fight him but also to use Adrien’s flat-footed style.

Fighting like Broner in backing up against the ropes led to Mayweather taking a lot of punishment from Maidana. The shoulder roll defense didn’t help Mayweather much because Maidana was hitting him with chopping shots to the head.

Maidana will have a lot of options for nice paydays if he comes back o the sort at this point in his career.

These are some exciting fights available to Maidana:

  • Adrien Broner
  • Floyd Mayweather, Jr.
  • Shawn Porter
  • Errol Spence Jr.
  • Terence Crawford
  • Yordenis Ugas
  • Danny Garcia
  • Vergil Ortiz Jr.
