Where next for Dereck Chisora?

By Ricardo Lorenzo: Having had his scheduled opponent Wladimir Klitschko pull out of their April 30th bout with an abdominal injury for the second time, Dereck Chisora has once again been left without an opponent to fight weeks into his training camp. However, it seems that many heavyweights in the division are keen to fight him while he remains undefeated and British heavyweight champion.

Chisora (14-0) is relatively unknown in the world heavyweight mix with his best scalps being a well past his best Danny Williams and two victories over Sam Sexton. This leaves him still at a domestic level champion in the eyes of many boxing enthusiasts with much to prove. I believe that if Dereck Chisora wants to make himself a more credible opponent for someone such as a Klitschko or David Haye he needs to beat the best at his domestic level, then move on
to European, then he may warrant the world title shot he was gifted.

This would mean fighting a guy like Tyson Fury (14-0), a huge heavyweight who’s best career highlight is punching himself in the face. But now under the tutelage of Emanuel Steward is going to be heading presumably in the right direction, with Steward probably trying to make Fury fight like a Klitschko, both of whom he trains.

Even if Dereck were to avoid fighting a guy like Tyson Fury, Michael Sprott or even Audley Harrison at a domestic level I
believe that the European level of competition is just too much for him to handle as well, with heavyweights such as Dimitrenko, Povetkin, Chagaev and Valuev none of whom I can see Dereck Chisora being able to beat. With Valuev for example I just don’t see him being able to avoid Valuev’s long jab and see him being kept at distance for twelve rounds. Many people watch Dereck Chisora and believe his head is on a bobble – it is not. After a while Chisora stops moving his head and becomes vulnerable to a stiff jab.

With a promoter like Frank Warren in his corner Dereck is able to both elevate his ego and his level of opposition in the heavyweight mix. With Warren somehow managing to arrange a contract with Wladimir Klitschko in which he will have to fight Chisora sooner or later, will we find out the true ability of Dereck Chisora beforehand, or will we be forced to watch him fight hand-picked opposition to make him appear to be someone who we should spend money on to watch fight the world heavyweight champion.

I’m not bias against Dereck Chisora, I’m just a firm believer that he needs the opportunities and opponents to either prove he is the real deal he claims to be because as we know with the original ‘Delboy’ he always came up short.
