Klitschko vs. Chisora: How badly will Wladimir beat Dereck?

By Jason Kim: IBF/WBO heavyweight champion Wladiimr Klitschko (55-3, 39 KO’s) initially chose to fight unbeaten Dereck Chisora (14-0, 9 KO’s) as a mere tune-up fight to get warmed up for a huge money fight against WBA heavyweight champion David Haye (25-1, 23 KO’s) in July. Now, Wladimir will have to be content with the Chisora fight being a tune-up bout for a fight against Tomasz Adamek in September.

Chisora is short at only 6’1″, and doesn’t have a lot of power in his shots to make himself a competitive opponent on paper for Wladimir. Chisora is a great talker, very articulate when arguing and relaxed in making his arguments. However, Chisora won’t be arguing with Klitschko when they meet up on April 30th at the SAP-Arena, in Mannheim, Germany. Chisora is going to have to prove that he’s Wladimir’s equal or better in the ring instead of outside of it. And that’s where Chisora is likely going to fail badly. In Chisora’s fight agaisnt Same Sexton on September 18th last year, Chisora had problems with the jab and combinations from the 6’2″ Sexton.

It looked at times like Chisora was fighting a heavyweight that was much bigger than him, as Sexton appeared to have a much longer reach and was able to dominate Chisora from the outside. It wasn’t under the sixth round that Chisora started to pressure Sexton and land nice combinations in close as Sexton began to fade. Ultimately, Sexton wore out completely and made an amateurish mistake in the 9th when he grabbed one of Chisora’s arms and found himself getting pounded on by one of Chisora’s free arms.

Chisora continued to pound Sexton until the referee stopped the bout. However, with Wladimir, if Chisora is unable to get into the fight for six rounds, he’s like going to find himself having been knocked out. He can’t afford to let a fighter with as much power and as good a jab as Wladimir tee off on him for six rounds while he tries to figure out a way to crack Wladiir’s fighting style. They’ll be picking up the pieces of Chisora if Wladimir is allowed to land his power shots and jab for six long rounds. Wladimir is too big for Chisora and there’s too wide of a talent gap for this fight.
