Johnson-Froch: Will Glen send Carl back to England in humilating defeat?

By Scott Gilfoid: The way I see it, WBC super middleweight champion Carl Froch (27-1, 20 KO’s) is 1-2 in his Super Six tournament competition against the likes of the talented Andre Dirrell, Mikkel Kessler and Arthur Abraham. Froch clearly won his fight with Abraham last November, I give him that much. However, Froch just as clearly lost to both Dirrell and Kessler, even though Froch was able to get one of those decisions that fighters often get when fighting at home in front of their fans.

Froch, 33, will now be facing 42-year-old Glen Johnson (51-14-2, 35 KO’s) in a do-or-die semifinal fight in April or May of this year. Froch is probably one of the most confident fighters that you’ll ever meet in your life. The guy is supremely confident, and that’s not a good thing. I’m betting he’s already overlooking Johnson based on his advanced win and his mediocre record. But it’s going to come back to haunt Froch when Johnson starts unloading on him with his powerful looping power shots and getting Froch backing up.

Johnson is one of those fighters that constantly comes forward no matter what. He’s not going to make the mistake of backing off the way that Abraham was doing in his loss to Froch. Had Abraham kept coming forward he would have worn Froch out the same way Kessler did last year in April. Johnson won’t back up and will coming forward behind a jab and his looping right hands.

Once he has Froch on the inside, this is where you’re going to see Johnson really dominate because Froch has no inside game other than holding and hitting and throwing an occasional rabbit shot. Watch Froch’s fight with Dirrell if you don’t know what I’m talking about. Froch looked dreadful on the inside and spent most of the time holding and hitting and roughing Dirrell up. That kind of thing won’t work against Johnson. He’s going to really batter Froch and make him break down mentally and physically.
