Holyfield vs. Williams: Evander not ready to move onto something else just yet

By Dan Ambrose: 48-year-old Evander Holyfield (43-10-2, 28 KO’s) stubbornly refuses to give up on his dream of capturing all the heavyweight titles before finally retiring from the sport. However, soon enough the decision may be taken out of his hands as he continues to age and finds it harder and harder to find opponents he can still beat. Holyfield is still good enough right now to beat B level fighters like his opponent for Saturday night, 38-year-old Sherman Williams (34-11-2, 19 KO’s).

Holyfield should win this fight unless he’s lost even more of his skills since he last fought last year in April against Francois Botha. However, Holyfield will eventually be forced to fight 3rd tier heavyweights when he ages even more, and at some point he’ll be forced to fight guys that just laced up the gloves pretty much for the first time in order to keep winning. Hopefully by then Holyfield will get a clue and realize that there isn’t going to be a title fight against one of the champions.

Holyfield told Iol.co.za, “When you get older, you don’t recover as fast and you have to do everything properly. Throwing it don’t work. I guess the most important thing I learned is not to quit, be able to make adjustments, be real about yourself, know what you can do and know when you have to move on to do something else…I plan to be heavyweight champion again, too.”

Holyfield needs to set his bar a little lower and just hope he can get by the journeyman Williams on Saturday in one piece, because Holyfield looked horrible in his last fight against Botha.
