Image: Cleverly wants Froch bout – Boxing NewsBy Scott Gilfoid: WBO light heavyweight interim champion Nathan Cleverly (21-0, 10 KO’s) says he wants to fight WBC super middleweight champion Carl Froch (27-1, 20 KO’s) once Carl is out of the Super Six tournament later on this year. Cleverly, 23, has an upcoming fight against World Boxing Organization (WBO) light heavyweight champion Jurgen Braehmer next.

Should Cleverly get by that fight, he can then try and lure Froch into a good money all British fight. Froch may be available to fight Cleverly sooner than many boxing fans think. Froch has a Super Six tournament fight coming up against Glen Johnson on May 21st, and if Froch loses that fight, he’ll be eliminated from the Super Six tournament and thus free to face Cleverly after that.

While some boxing fans feel that Froch will defeat Johnson, I see him getting beaten up and taken out by the hard hitting ex-light heavyweight champion. Froch has already talked about wanting to move up to the light heavyweight division and face WBC light heavyweight champion Jean Pascal. But with a loss to Johnson, Froch will have to settle for Cleverly. Froch can then move up and face Cleverly for his WBO title. I suspect Cleverly will get beaten by Braehmer, so there won’t be much point in the Cleverly-Froch fight other than the interest of two recently beaten Brits without much defensive skills teeing off on each other. It might be mildly interesting from that perspective but not much more.

In an interview at Sky Sports, Cleverly had this to say about Froch: “Hopefully I will have the WBO title at some point this year, and if Froch stepped up it would mean he could fight me for the world title. It’s a fight the public would love, and I wouldn’t have a problem with it.”
