Groves says DeGale is “destined to fail”

By Sean McDaniel: Undefeated Commonwealth super middleweight champion George Groves (11-0, 9 KO’s) and British champion James DeGale (9-0, 7 KO’s) are on cruise course to face each other next as long as the contracts can be worked over and finalized. Groves’ camp has reportedly received contracts from DeGale’s promoter Frank Warren and are being looked over.

Groves, 22, however, isn’t impressed with DeGale and doesn’t understand all the positive press that DeGale has been getting recently after his 9th round TKO win over British super middleweight champion Paul Smith on December 11th.

In an article at boxrec.com, Groves said “I think it’s sort of now or never you know. I was made mandatory for the British ttiles, knowing full well that DeGale would probably pick up the British title [from Smith]. Therefore, he [DeGale] would have to fight me at some point if he wants to keep that title. He boxed pretty well [in Smith fight] but people are getting a little ahead of themselves now, calling him the special one and his trainer comparing him to Floyd Mayweather, a fighter who comes along every twenty years. I disagree with that, obviously, because I made a couple of mistakes in my last fight [against Kenny Anderson on November 13th 2010], that were highlighted , that’s made DeGale even better. He’s still is his name. He is destined to fail and as soon as he boxes me, everyone will know that.

Groves was dropped by Anderson and was tagged a lot in that fight. If it was just that fight, you could sort of excuse Groves and maybe chock it up as just an off night. However, Groves was hit with a lot of right hands in his bout against the limited Alfredo Contreras in July of last year. That fight and the Anderson fight pretty much proves that Groves has no defense and he doesn’t have the power or the boxing ability to make up for those glaring flaws. DeGale is going to destroy them when they fight.
