Chisora’s fortunes have turned around with Klitschko fight

By Sean McDaniel: Unbeaten British heavyweight champion Dereck Chisora (14-0, 9 KO’s) was crushed after learning that IBF/WBO heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko (55-3, 49 KO’s) pulled out of their scheduled December 11th bout last year after suffering an abdominal injury. It was thought then that the 26-year-old Chisora would never get another shot against Wladimir.

However, with the Haye negotiations falling apart, Wladimir turned back to Chisora to reschedule a fight for April 30th. Chisora is now in the position for getting a decent payday and lot of publicity in the Klitschko fight. Of course, Chisora has very little chance to win, as the odds are heavily against him by a 6-1 margin. But even in losing the fight, Chisora’s stock will go up because he’ll be much better known around the world.

The real trick in this fight for Chisora isn’t to keep from getting beaten, because it’s pretty much academic that Chisora will be losing. The real trick is for Chisora to put in a decent showing and not end up getting humiliated in a bad beating or knockout. Chisora hasn’t fought anyone like Wladimir during his short career. Chisora has been battling 2nd tier heavyweights like Sam Sexton and Danny Williams, and those guys are probably not even good enough to be Wladimir’s sparring partners.

When the news broke that Wladimir had pulled out of the fight, Chisora had this to say in an article at the Daily Mail: “I was in my hotel room in Germany when I heard the fight was off, so I ordered a burger and a beer. I’m still as confident about the fight this time around. Good things come to those who wait.”
