Burns to fight Laryea in March

By Scott Gilfoid: Well, it looks like WBO super featherweight champion Ricky Burns (30-2, 7 KO’s) is going to be taking another soft touch when he defends his World Boxing Organization title for the second time against #10 ranked Joseph Laryea (14-4, 11 KO’s) in March, according to Frank Warren. It looks like Burns is continuing the milking process which started with his first defense against little known fringe contender Andreas Evensen in December 2010.

Burns won that fight, which is saying much, by a 12 round decision. Instead of switching it up and fighting a really quality fighter ranked high in the super featherweight division, Burns will be reaching down and fighting Laryea, who I’ve never heard of in my life. I saw video of him fighting British domestic fighter Paul Appleby and I must say, Laryea looked positively horrible. I’m being kind here. I don’t rank Laryea as a top 20 fighter.

There’s way too many better fighters than him in the super featherweight division. Don’t get me wrong, Laryea is the perfect fighter to milk a title against. That’s an admirable pick, but not one which has a real chance of winning. I was hoping Burns would step it up several levels and take on Robert Guerrero or Jorge Linares in his next defense, because Burns already fought a soft touch in his last defense against Evensen. Linares and Guerrero would spank Burns, believe me. I guess it’s better if Burns fights Laryea, because at least he can hold on to his title a little while longer.
