Image: Roach still flapping his gums about Pacquiao fighting MayweatherBy Dave Lahr: Manny Pacquiao’s trainer Freddie Roach is still yapping about his wish for boxing’s number #1 fighter Floyd Mayweather Jr to decide on fighting Pacquiao in the near future. Roach doesn’t seem to get it that Mayweather has other things on his plate to worry about that are more important than disposing of Pacquiao in a one-sided fight. Mayweather has mounting legal problems that seem to be snowballing by the day.

The last thing he needs is to take on Pacquiao and batter him around the ring in 2011. Roach needs to put a sock in it and wait for Mayweather to get his legal problems behind him. In the meantime, Roach needs to try and position Pacquiao against some guys that can actually still fight instead of picking out beatable guys for Pacquiao to pad his record with.

Roach seems to think that Mayweather is afraid of Pacquiao and that he’s just trying to preserve his unbeaten record by not fighting him. That’s not what it is. Before the legal issues started crowding Mayweather’s mind, he was trying like mad to get a fight with Pacquiao but couldn’t get the Filipino fighter to agree to the random blood tests that he wanted in order to fight him. That wasn’t Mayweather’s fault that Pacquiao wouldn’t agree to the tests, that was Pacquiao’s fault. If Roach wants to blame someone, he needs turn around and look at his fighter for not doing exactly what Mayweather was asking of him to make the fight happen.

When you snooze, you lose. They could have had the fight with boxing’s cash cow Mayweather. It’s too late for that now. Mayweather has moved on and will have to settle all his problems before he can get to Pacquiao. It may not happen at all now. Roach should perhaps forget about Mayweather and focus on trying to talk Pacquiao into fighting WBC middleweight champion Sergio Martinez so that boxing fans can see a real fight.
