Khan faces Maidana on Saturday, but still talking about his pipe dream fight against Mayweather

Image: Khan faces Maidana on Saturday, but still talking about his pipe dream fight against MayweatherBy William Mackay: Amir Khan (23-1, 17 KO’s) has what could be a make it or break it fight this Saturday night against World Boxing Association (WBA) light welterweight interim champion Marcos Maidana (29-1, 27 KO’s) in Las Vegas, Nevada, and yet Khan is still talking about a future fight with Floyd Mayweather Jr. It’s as if Khan thinks the Maidana fight is practically in the bag. I don’t know what his trainer Freddie Roach has been telling him about his skills during their training camp for the Maidana fight, but Khan needs to realize that Maidana is likely going to end his dreams with one big shot on Saturday night.

In a way, I can sort of understand why Khan might be looking past Maidana. After all, Khan is from England and probably hasn’t seen too much of Maidana’f fights like Americans have. Had he seen Maidana’s previous fights against Victor Ortiz and Victor Cayo, the last thing Khan would be talking about is a future fight with Mayweather. Khan is even looking past the fight that he’ll have to win against the Timothy Bradley vs. Devon Alexander winner, if Khan does on that winner. Khan may end up facing Juan Manuel Marquez next if Khan somehow get past Maidana. That’s probably going to be the next fight for Khan, because Marquez wants the fight and it will make more money than a bout against Bradley or Alexander. It’s too bad that Khan won’t be able to take the Marquez fight on a winning note, because Khan will very likely be knocked out by Maidana.

Speaking to the Sport.scotsman.com, Khan said “If I keep winning and doing well then it [a pipe dream fight against Mayweather] is a realistic possibility. It’s a fight waiting to happen in the future. It’s every boxer’s dream to become recognized as the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world. I can’t fight Manny Pacquiao because he’s part of the same camp and has the same trainer, so Floyd is the best fighter out there, and as I reach my peak he will still be around at the top of his game, so it will be up to me to take him off his throne with my style and speed. I want to bring the biggest fights back to England and Floyd has also said he would like to fight in the UK.”

It’s kind of sad to see Khan talking about a fight against Mayweather. It kind of reminds me of some poor guy talking about when he wins the lottery and what he’ll do with all the money he gets, when in reality he’s got almost zero chance of that ever happening. But pretending that Khan does face Mayweather some day, he has no chance now or in the future unless the fight happens 10 years from now when Mayweather is in his 40s. I would then give Khan a decent chance of winning as long as Mayweather didn’t tap his chin with anything hard.
