Image: Kell Brook wants Amir KhanBy Jon Johns: While Amir Khan defended his WBA light welterweight title against Marcos Maidana last Saturday, another star from Britain was getting one step closer to becoming a World Champion. Kell “Special K” Brook defended his WBO Inter-Continental title against Ghanaian Philip Kotey (21-6). The fight was aired on British pay per view on the same bill as the Khan-Maidana fight.

Brook destroyed Kotey within two rounds. Unfortunately, Kotey was never in the fight, and the ref was forced to stop the action within a minute of the second round. Kotey was shaken and hurt from the get go, and soon as Brook tagged him, he hurt him. Brook knocked down the Kotey at the end of the first round with a beautiful two punch combination short right hand followed by a left hook.

This win puts Brook in line for a title shot with Mike Jones (23-0) in mid 2011, both these fighters are undefeated and both have had same amount of pro fights and their knockout ratio is about the same, Mike Jones edging it by two more knock outs. Brook is currently ranked no.1 by the WBO and Jones no.2.

After the fight Brook had a lot to say about his fight with Kotey, and hoped for bouts against Mike Jones and Khan:

Brook went on to say that he was very confident of winning the fight against Kotey, and he mentioned he trained hard to this fight and had a good training camp. He believes highly in his power in both hands as describing them as ‘dynamite’.

When Brook was asked about Jones, he was more then confident in beating the undefeated American fighter, claiming he would scapl Mike Jones, but he does admit it to be a great competivie fight between the two undefeated fighters, but there is some confusing about where the fight should take place accordding to Brooks, he wants the fight in Britain because he is ranked no.1 by the WBO and Mike Jones ranked no.2, but Jones is the champion. Brook says this is been a dream for him since he was nine years old. Brook comes from the same gym that the great Naseem Hamed came from. Brook has always looked up to Naseem, and he went on to say that he wants his own fight in Madison Square like Naseem.

Last but not least, when asked about Khan, Brook went on to say that when Khan moves up to 147lbs, he will have to face him at some point and if he chooses to fight Brook, he said he would destroy him.

This fight between Brook and Khan would be great for British boxing, but let’s not forget this was said before the Khan-Maidana fight took place, so maybe Brook has changed his mind or at least rephrased the word destroy. But one thing for sure it will be a great competitive fight. Both are young, hungry and both have the potential to be great fighters. But let’s not get excited so quick because this fight ain’t happening for another year or s. Khan still has unfinished business with two fighters and he wants to unify the light welterweight division first but this is one to look forward to for British boxing fans and the world!

I don’t know what American boxing fans know about Brook? Please comment
