Are Pacquiao’s fans happy about Mayweather’s troubles?

Image: Are Pacquiao’s fans happy about Mayweather’s troubles?By Chris Williams: It seems like a lot of Manny Pacquiao’s diehard fans are really gloating over Floyd Mayweathers’ recent legal problems involving his ex-girlfriend. It seems kind of strange that these fans should be gloating when what this means is that a fight between Pacquiao and Mayweather is much less likely to happen, especially if Mayweather has to do any time in confinement. It makes me wonder if these same Pacquiao fans are glad because they doubted that their man could beat Mayweather and with him off the table, they can assured that Pacquiao will be able to finish his career without suffering a humiliating one-sided 12 round loss to Mayweather.

It must be a big relief for some of them, because I know if I was a Pacquiao fan, I wouldn’t want him to fight Mayweather either. Floyd has too much talent, speed, defense and just overall boxing ability for the little Filipino to beat, as far as I’m concerned. But, yes, the gloating could be a sign of relief for some of Pacquiao’s fans because it means that Pacquiao won’t have to face Mayweather and can now spend the remainder of his career fighting rematches against Miguel Cotto and Antonio Margarito. I see those as being his future fights and I have no interest in watching either of those farces. There isn’t too many other options, in particular if Bob Arum is going to keep matching Pacquiao against fighters in his stable.

I think Pacquiao can beat Margarito and Cotto, so it’s good that he’s being matched against those guys. But Mayweather is a whole different ball of wax. I would hate to be a Pacquiao fan watching him fight Mayweather. It would be a sad day for me. But since I’m a fan of boxing, I’m not happy with Mayweather’s problems, because it could make a fight between Pacquiao and Mayweather less likely to happen. I’m not interested in seeing Pacquiao fight Cotto and Margarito for titles, especially if it’s a catch weight fight. That’s not even slightly appealing. Pick a guy that was torn apart, convince them to fight at a catch weight, and then beat up on them. Why isn’t Pacquiao fighting Sergio Martinez, Paul Williams, Shane Mosley or Andre Berto?

It’s so sad to see Pacquiao’s fans gloating over Mayweather’s problems, because it makes me think they didn’t have any confidence in Pacquiao’s ability to beat Mayweather. Being realistic about it, I can’t see Pacquiao having any chance of beating Mayweather. So, I guess I would be happy about it too. Pacquiao really dodged a bullet.
