Pacquiao vs. Mayweather: The Decision

By Boxing News - 07/13/2010 - Comments

By Christian Ramos: Say what you want to say about either Pretty Boy Floyd Mayweather Jr. or Manny Pacquiao, they are both getting exactly what they want. The public interest is at an all-time high. The characters are being portrayed to perfection. Floyd Mayweather Jr. has successfully remained the sport’s most hated villain, and Manny Pacquiao is eyed as the superhero to take him down.

While all the pieces to this mega-fight are functioning flawlessly, you have to give credit where credit is due. No matter if you feel Mayweather’s counter-punching and defense will dominate Pac man or Mayweather’s chin will get blown to pieces by the Filipino sensation, the true winners of this mega event have always been Bob Arum and Golden Boy Promotions.

Whether or not this fight is going to happen is not even a question. Since when have Top Rank and Golden Boy Promotions decided they are going to pass up an extremely lucrative opportunity? The same can be asked for Money Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao. It has not happened and we’ll never see it. Never forget, boxing is a business. It’s sports entertainment at its best.

Save yourselves a lot of time and energy debating a subject that has been in the bank for years now. Mayweather “retired” from boxing while being ranked #1 P4P on all P4P lists to be replaced by international phenomenon that is Manny Pacquiao, his complete opposite in terms of his humility and gentle demeanor. The men have fought each others same opponents and have constantly “failed” to reach agreements on money and blood testing. MONEY AND BLOODTESTING!?!? Are you serious? These are professional athletes. You really think that the world’s best boxing promoters and the world’s best boxers are going to have a problem finding common grounds on money and blood testing out of all things? Mayweather is not scared and Manny is not on PED’s. Both have been tested ever since they entered the sport. Both have always been clean and have been very lucrative to add, selling out arenas and even stadiums all over the map and earning millions meanwhile.

We are witnessing a promoting clinic. It might be in November, might be Christmas night, or it might be next year. Either way, these fighters will meet. If it’s next year, you must believe they’ll be pampered all the way to the fight. Think about it. Even if it happens next year, how sweet must it be for Mayweather, “the guy that has ducked everybody”, to finally have the guts to face Manny Pacquiao, the first ever world champion in 8 boxing divisions (by that time he beat Cotto again). That sounds like an even bigger fight to me than it would be in November.

Do not underestimate the marketing genius in Golden Boy and Top Rank. They will never let us down, and it’s not because they love us. They will never let us down because our money is willing to make them want to do it. The decision has been made. Everybody wins.
