Pacquiao thinks Mayweather is afraid to fight him

Image: Pacquiao thinks Mayweather is afraid to fight himBy Dave Lahr: For some reason, Manny Pacquiao has got it in his head that Floyd Mayweather Jr. is afraid to fight him. How Pacquiao got the opinion is anyone’s guess, because all Mayweather is asking for from Pacquiao is a better financial deal than 50-50, which is what Pacquiao wants. I fail to see how Mayweather asking for more money translates into him being afraid of Pacquiao. That just seems like some twisted logic to me.

Why shouldn’t Mayweather ask for more money? His fight against Juan Manuel Marquez, Oscar De La Hoya and Ricky Hatton all did better numbers than Pacquiao’s fights with the same fighters. And recently, Mayweather did twice the PPV buys compared to Pacquiao with Mayweather’s 1.4 million PPV buys against Shane Mosley. Pacquiao, for his part, only got a measly 700,000 for his fight against Joshua Clottey in March.

Pacquiao says in an at The Freeman, “Right now, it’s not yet clear. He’s afraid to fight me.” I don’t believe that for a second. Mayweather just wants a better deal based on his better PPV numbers. Anyone would likely do the same exact thing that Mayweather is doing now if they were routinely outselling Pacquiao on PPV. Mayweather is just being a good businessman. He knows how well his fights have been doing and knows how many more PPV buys he’s generating compared to Pacquiao. Why then should Mayweather give Pacquiao and even financial split just because Pacquiao wants him to.
