Froch still talking about his loss to Kessler

Image: Froch still talking about his loss to KesslerBy Scott Gilfoid: My my, it looks like former WBC super middleweight champion Carl Froch (26-1, 20 KO’s) is still bitter and troubled by his 12 round decision loss Mikkel Kessler in April. In a column written by Froch at Thisisnottingham.co.uk, complains about a number of things related to the Kessler fight. It’s hard to keep track of all the different things that Froch feels unhappy about. He didn’t like the date change, the flight over to Denmark from England, the judge’s scores for the fight and Abraham’s promoters Sauerland Events.

Froch isn’t happy that he had an agreement to fight Abraham in England after Froch fought Kessler in Denmark. Froch says “The biggest shame is that Sauerland has screwed the British fight fans out of witnessing this blockbuster [Abraham vs. Froch bout] fight on British soil.” Sauerland may be doing Froch a favor by having the fight take place in a neutral venue because there’s an excellent chance that Froch will lose to the hard hitting Abraham, and it might not be such a bad idea of the British fight fans don’t see Froch get knocked out or dominated by Abraham.

Froch seems to have a different memory about the Kessler fight than I do. Froch says “I had him [Kessler] reeling and hurt a few times in there and his swollen and damaged face at the end told its own story.” I only remember one time in the fight where Froch hurt Kessler and that was in the 5th. Other than that, Kessler seemed fine. I do remember seeing Froch get staggered by a big right hand from Kessler at point.

I wonder why Froch didn’t mention that. “As a reigning champion, I felt I did enough to hold onto my title, but it goes with the territory of fighting away. Sure it was a tough night at the office, but one which I showed who was boss.” This is actually quite funny. Froch hardly showed how he was boss in the Kessler fight. If anything, it was the other way around with Kessler showing Froch who was boss by simply outworking him in almost round of the fight.

Froch didn’t do enough to hold onto his title. Unless he was expecting to get the benefit of the doubt despite appearing to lose by two to four rounds, I just don’t understand what Froch is talking about. If he wanted to win the fight, he should have worked harder during the middle of the rounds like Kessler. Froch lost because he got off to a bad start, then gave away the middle rounds and was forced to rally at the end to make it a close fight.

Froch, still bellyaching about Kessler, says “Next time, I would not leave it to the judges in a rematch. A fight between us in the future would certainly sell out quickly and is one hopefully we can do later in the Super Six tournament.” I agree with Froch about a Kessler-Froch rematch selling well. I think it would do really well. But I don’t see that happening in the Super Six tournament because I think Froch won’t make it to the semi finals because I think he’s going to lose to Abraham.

If Froch does fight Kessler again, I see the fight as another decision loss for Froch. No way will he knock Kessler out. And I’m no lbuying Froch’s predictions. Froch said he was going to decapitate Kessler before their fight, and look would happened. Froch ended up taking a lot of punishment and losing the fight to Kessler.

Froch should forget about making excuses or worrying about a rematch with Kessler. The boxing fans saw the Froch-Kessler fight and know who rightfully won the bout. It just makes Froch look bitter to see him still harping his loss. Froch needs to let it go and worry about not getting knocked out by Abraham. That should be his main concern, not living in the past and trying to explain away loss to a talented fighter.
