Calzaghe, 38, has been out of action for two years since retiring after beating Roy Jones Jr. in 2008. Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer is looking to match the 38-year-old Calzaghe against Hopkins in July in Cardiff, with WBA light welterweight champion Amir Khan fighting on the same card, according to Gareth Davies from the Telegraph.co.uk. Calzaghe previously defeated Hopkins in April 2008, beating him by a 12 round split decision that left few fans satisfied.

However, Calzaghe hasn’t made up his mind yet whether to make the comeback against Hopkins. Schaefer says “I have spoken to Joe [Calzaghe] several times about fighting Bernard Hopkins in Cardiff. He is ambivalent. Some says he says ‘yes, he’d like to do it. Other days he is not sure if he wants to get back in the ring. There are days when he wants to do it and days he would rather not. Bernard would love to go over to Wales to fight Joe, and I think we could make it a major event there. I think the Welsh public would enjoy a return match, this time in Cardiff.”

Last time Hopkins and Calzaghe fought it took place at the Thomas and Mack Center in Las Vegas, Nevada. It didn’t do all that well unfortunately. It was a case of the American public not being too familiar with Calzaghe. In hindsight, the bout should have taken place in Wales instead of the United States, because Calzaghe would have been able to attract a lot of fan for the bout, as many as 50,000 fans if they put the Calzaghe-Hopkins rematch in one of the stadiums in Wales.

It’s understandable why Calzaghe would be unsure about making a comeback. He’s made a lot of money in boxing and is set for life. There really isn’t much point in him continuing to fight other than getting one last payday. Calzaghe was knocked down in his fight with Hopkins and was also dropped in his last fight against Roy Jones Jr. With two years out of the ring, there would be a danger that Calzaghe’s conditioning and reflexes will have deteriorated to the point where he might get beaten by Hopkins.

The good thing is that Hopkins hasn’t looked all that good in his last two fights and might not have enough offensive tools left to give Calzaghe a lot of problems. Hopkins seems to be more of a pot shot fighter now and needs rest breaks after throwing punches. Calzaghe would have an excellent chance of outworking Hopkins and beating him for a second time.
