Image: Cloud-Johnson on Devon Alexander’s August 7th St Louis homecomingBy Peter Wells: It wasn’t too long ago that we heard the news that Glen Johnson’s IBF Light Heavyweight title challenge against unbeaten Tavoris Cloud was off. Now the fight is on again on August 7th in St Louis. Though the main attraction of course, will be hometown hero Devon Alexander. The WBC Light Welterweight ruler is still undecided on his next opponent after talks with rival Zab Judah fell through. Zab was very adamant on returning to St Louis after last time out dethroned another St Louis hero and good friend of Devon, Cory Spinks. I’m sure Devon was excited about getting revenge on Judah.

Anyway Tavoris Cloud is undefeated and his last outing will have been nearly a year ago when he collides with Johnson when he won the vacant title versus now retired Brit, Clinton Woods. He is 20-0(18 KO’s) but Glen Johnson showed in February that he was still as dangerous as ever. He was coming of a second and more decisive defeat to another hot shot Chad Dawson and came in against tough Yusaf Mack. It was a close and thrilling battle until Glen finally stopped Mack in the 6th after knocking his foe down 3 times.

The solid Jamaican is 50-13-2(34KO’s), the most noticeable defeats were to, Bernard Hopkins (TKO 11), followed by 2 points defeats both close, then suffered 4 defeats in a row the next year most notably to unbeaten Sven Ottke (UD 12) for the IBF title, he then lost 2 in a row again to Derrick Harmon and Julio Cesar Gonzalez both on points, and suffered his 2 draws to Clinton Woods and Daniel Judah – who he avenged just last year – and has since lost to Antonio Tarver, Clinton Woods and Chad Dawson twice, all points. He has though beaten Tarver and Woods and KO’d Roy Jones Jr. So he is a super tough fighter who’s fought them all, but is still a huge force.

So Cloud will have his hands full for sure, but Glen has had his on and offs and has suffered defeats to fighters to don’t brawl with him or can’t take a punch. He’s only been stopped once in his career, to Bernard Hopkins and despite Cloud having great power I doubt he’ll stop him. Cloud did show he can take a punch against Clinton Woods, which in my opinion was a great enjoyable fight. I’m positive this one will be just – if not more – thrilling.
