By Jim Dower: Former International Boxing Federation super bantamweight champion Steve Molitor (30-1, 12 KO’s) stopped 35-year-old Feliciano Dario Azuaga Ledezma (76-16-2, 64 KO’s) in a 5th round stoppage tonight at the Casino Rama, Rama, in Ontario, Canada. Molitor, 29, making his second fight since being stopped inn the 4th round by Celestino Caballero last year in November, knocked Ledezma down with a hard left hand in the 4th.

After he got up, Molitor pounded him at will, landing big body shots, until Ledezma’s corner threw in the towel to have the fight stopped in the 5th. The bout was stopped at 1:50 of the 5th round.

Molitor looked good throughout the fight, circling Ledezma and firing off fast jabs and combinations and rarely getting hit. Molitor used his height and reach advantage to pound the slower and more limited Ledezma like he was a punching bag from the start of the fight.

Ledezma had huge problems trying to land any of his shots, because of his slow hand speed and crude offensive attacks. Part of the problem for Ledezma was that he wasn’t keeping his guard up on a consistent basis and kept getting drilled by Molitor with hooks and straight left hands to the head.

However, this wasn’t exactly a world class opponent that Molitor had in front of him, so the win needs to be put in perspective. This was a fighter that was selected in order to make Molitor look good and he did his part in beating up the 35-year-old.

While Ledezma had an impressive record coming into the fight, especially in terms of knockouts, a high percentage of those wins came against badly over-matched opponents with dreadful records. In terms of quality opposition, Ledezma has faced a handful of them, and in every case without fail, he’s been beaten.

Molitor needs to step it up a level in competition because he needs to fight some quality fighters. He’s had it pretty easy himself during his career with soft opponents. Molitor needs to go after someone like Daniel Ponce De Leon, and then try for a rematch with Caballero or a shot at one of the other super bantamweight champions like Toshiaki Nishoka or Juan Manuel Lopez.

In more interesting action on the card, undefeated Marvin Sonsona (14-0, 12 KO’s) defeated champion Jose Lopez (39-8-2, 32 KO’s) by a 12 round unanimous decision to capture the World Boxing Organization super flyweight title. Sonsona, 19, wasn’t exactly dominating, however, as the fight was fairly close and Sonsona had problems with the power of Lopez.

The final judges’ scores were 114-111, 115-110 and 116-109. In the 4th round, Lopez was almost knocked completely through the ring ropes after getting nailed by a big right hand from Sonsona. Lopez didn’t help himself by throwing low blows from time to time in the fight, which resulted in him losing points in the 8th round. Lopez, 37-years-old, was making his first defense of his World Boxing Organization title after winning the vacant title with a victory over Pramuansak Posuwan in March of 2009.
