News: Jones-Green agree to terms for Dec 2nd bout; Sonsona back in action on Nov. 21st

By Eric Thomas: Roy Jones Jr. (54-5, 40 KO’s) and former World Boxing Association light heavyweight champion Danny Green (27-3, 24 KO’s) have reportedly come to terms for a December 2nd fight at the Acer Arena, in Sydney, Australia. Everything has been verbally agreed to and the only thing that needs to be done is the signing of the contracts.

The bout will be held at cruiserweight, so that Jones, 40, will be able to fight for the 36-year-old Green’s obscure IBO International Boxing Organization cruiserweight title. After having won major titles in the middleweight, super middleweight and light heavyweight division, it’s hard to understand what Jones’ attraction might be for the IBO cruiserweight title. It’s not a major belt, and really more of a trinket.

Honestly, it seems more trouble than it’s worth and Jones might end being slowed down by moving up to cruiserweight for this bout. However, Jones fought remarkably well when he moved up to heavyweight to defeat WBA heavyweight champion John Ruiz by a 12 round unanimous decision in 2003 to capture his WBA title, so I could be wrong about this.

If Jones is moving up to cruiserweight with the intention of possibly making a second jump to the heavyweight division, I could understand him wanting to move up in weight. But, since Jones had a hard time adjusting to taking off weight the last time he moved up to heavyweight, it seems that Jones would be better served to stick it out at light heavyweight rather than experiment once again in moving up in weight.

At 40, Jones doesn’t have the time to take a year or two get back to feeling good again at his old weight of light heavyweight once he moves back down again. Jones was knocked out in two consecutive bouts in 2004 after having moved back down from the heavyweight division to light heavyweight.

Jones was knocked out initially by Antonio Tarver in a 2nd round knockout and then knocked out for the second time only four months later in September 2004 in a 9th round stoppage by Glen Johnson. Jones would then lose his 3rd consecutive fight, getting beaten in a 12 round unanimous decision loss to Tarver a year later in October 2005.

After all that, you would think that Jones would have learned his lesson about moving up in weight. However, it looks as if he’s getting ready to start again with the Green fight.

Sonsona to fight on November 21st

Unbeaten World Boxing Organization super flyweight champion Marvin Sonsona (14-0, 12 KOs) will be fighting on November 21st against a still to be determined opponent. The location of the fight will be the same as his last fight, and will be taking place at the Casino Rama, in Rama, Ontario.

Only 19, Sonsona defeated WBO champion Jose Lopez by a 12 round decision last weekend in an exciting right where both he and Lopez were hurt. Some people say that he reminds them of a younger version of Manny Pacquiao, only without the blazing hand speed.

At 5’7”, Sonsona is incredibly tall for a super flyweight and if he can stay at this weight without growing out of it in the future, he could very dominant for years to come. Whether he stays at this weight or moves up in the future, one thing is certain, Sonsona is going to have to learn something about defense because he’s liken a punch magnet right now. He was very poor in defending from right hands in his fight against Lopez and looked uncomfortable when being put under pressure.

Sonsona’s management are looking to put him on one of the U.S. cable networks, such as Showtime or HBO, so that the American audiences can see him fight. His co-promoter Sampson Lewkowicz is open to Sonsona fighting Vic Darchinyan in the future, but not until Sonsona gets more experience and becomes popular in the United States.

Until Sonsona gets a large following in America, there won’t be any demand for a fight against Darchinyan other than from a small segment of die hard boxing fans of the sport. Sonsona won’t be fighting Nonito Donaire, unfortunately. His promoter doesn’t want to match him against another Filipino fighter in title bouts.
