Margarito vs. Mosley: A Slaughter No Matter How You Look At It

margo452346By Chris Williams: After conducting extensive research of both fighters, I got to say that Shane Mosley is going to get decimated by Antonio Margarito (37-5, 27 KOs) on January 24th. Mosley seems like a nice guy, but man he looked horrible in his last fight with Ricardo Mayorga. Mosley, 37, should consider himself incredibly lucky that he scored a 12th round in that fight because he looked like a loser to me.

Mosley is going to get beat, make no mistake about it. The only question is how badly. Since losing to Paul Williams in July 2007, Margarito has destroyed his last three opponents Golden Johnson, Kermit Cintron and Miguel Cotto, leaving them bloodied and battered. The same will probably happen to Mosley.

I’d like to think that Mosley will do better and at least get out of the fight merely losing by a decision, but I doubt it will happen like this. More than likely, he’ll stand in front of Margarito like an old one being sacrificed to the Polar bears.

Margarito will come forward throwing tons of punches and Mosley, his legs no longer working for him and his hand speed and defense badly deteriorated as well, will get quickly decapitated by Margarito in a fatal last stand. The fight is just wrong for Mosley, as it would be for his fellow Golden Boy Promotions partner Oscar De La Hoya.

It would be a massacre even if both of them decided to fight Margarito on the same night, as they would both fall one by one within a short period of time. My hope is that it will be relatively painless for Mosley, because I wouldn’t want to see him suffer like Cotto and Cintron had to. Mosley could probably hold his own with Margarito if it was a three round bout.

Anything longer than three rounds and it’s a slaughter. It’s too bad because Mosley was a great fighter at one point. At his age, he should be fighting faded fighters like De La Hoya rather than a top guy like Margarito. I respect him for doing it but I think he’s deceiving himself if he thinks he’s going to win. He won’t.

No, I’m afraid Mosley will lose, get battered, bleed all over the place and either have the fight stopped by the referee or end up having to quit in between rounds in a De La Hoyaesque type fashion. If Mosley is lucky, he might be able to hold off Margarito for a few rounds, but beyond that, he’s going to get chopped down. When the skills are gone, there’s nothing much you can do when you’re matched up with a younger fighter as good as Margarito.

Mosley has always gotten by on his speed, movement and his ability to throw fast combinations. His speed is much slower than it used to be, his movement has dropped off dramatically, leaving him a stationary fighter while his combinations are fewer and fewer because he can’t fight hard for three minutes of every round like he used to do. This could be the end of Mosley as a top level fighter.
