mares#1By Everest Castaneda: In an interview with ESPN Deportes, former WBC featherweight champion Abner Mares (29-1-1, 15 KOs) spoke about his next possible opponent, which may include a fight with undefeated WBC super bantamweight champion Leo Santa Cruz (29-0-1, 17 KOs) or a rematch with WBC featherweight champion Jhonny Gonzalez (57-8, 48 KOs).

To recapitulate, Gonzalez knocked out Mares in the first round of their scheduled 12 round WBC title fight.

Mares also reiterated the problems he experienced in his recent, hard fought 10 round unanimous decision victory against Arturo Santos Reyes (18-5, 5 KOs). First, Mares discussed the issues he felt in the ring on fight night. He declared, “I felt fine in the fight, but somewhat tired, fatigued, I was a little sick.”

Mares went on to state, “…I am focused on what’s ahead, a fight with Santa Cruz or Jhonny.” Even though Gonzalez will be in a tough battle against former WBO featherweight contender Gary Russell Jr. (25-1, 14 KOs) on March 28, Mares emphasized his intentions to rematch Gonzales noting, “I know Jhonny has a commitment with Gary Russell in two weeks, but that doesn’t matter, win or lose, I want this fight.”

Further, Mares maintained, “…I am thinking of returning June or July and end the year with a total of four fights, or three minimum.”

In addition, Mares spoke about the two fighters mentioned. He shared his analysis on which fighter is the more difficult stylistic match up. Mares claimed, “I think they’re both dangerous in their styles, Jhonny is dangerous because of his power, but he is not pressure (fighter)… and Leo, on the other hand, is a pressure fighter.”

Mares went on to say, “…both fights are equally complicated, in my inclination, a bit more complicated is Leo Santa Cruz because of his patience, his pressure, and his power.”

Whichever fighter is Mares’ next opponent, he will have a tough night; although, either fight will be an exciting, all action affair for boxing fans.
