Jhonny Gonzalez vs. Abner Mares possible for March

Jhonny GonzalezBy Dan Ambrose: Negotiations are taking place for a rematch between world champions Abner Mares (29-2-1, 15 KOs) and Jhonny Gonzalez (59-10, 49 KOs) for a fight that would take place in March. This would be a match-up for Mares, 30, to try and avenge his 1st round knockout loss at the hands of Gonzalez 2 ½ years ago in 2013. The two fighters never were able to face each other in a rematch as plans for a second fight were wiped out by injuries in the past.

It’s unclear whether the Gonzalez-Mares rematch will take place because they will need to somehow negotiate the fight and it could prove difficult. However, both fighters aren’t doing so well in terms of their careers.

Jhonny Gonzalez battles Jonathan Oquendo on Mayweather-Berto card

floyd4By Chris Williams: Former WBC featherweight champion Jhonny Gonzalez (58-9, 49 KOs) will be battling 32-year-old Jonathan Oquendo (25-4, 16 KOs) on the undercard of the Floyd Mayweather Jr. vs. Andre Berto fight next month at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada. The Gonzalez-Oquendo fight was added to the card on Thursday, and it’ll be a great addition to what is already an excellent undercard. The fight card will be televised on Showtime pay-per-view for $64.95 for standard definition and $74.95 for high definition.

Gonzalez, 33, is still trying to rebuild his career after being stopped in the 4th round by the younger Gary Russell Jr. last March in losing his WBC featherweight title. Since then, Gonzalez has stopped Kazuki Hashimoto in 2 rounds earlier this month. The fight against Hashimoto took place at super featherweight. There was no point in Gonzalez facing Russell Jr. again because he was clearly over-matched against him due to his hand speed advantage.
