maidana666By Raj Parmar: In a recent interview, Golden Boy chief Oscar De La Hoya made it known that he is firmly behind Marcos Maidana to upset Floyd Mayweather tomorrow night. This comes as little surprise given the well documented animosity between Oscar and Floyd. The former world champion believes age may be catching up with the pound for pound king and that Floyd may have declined physically since the first fight with Maidana.

“I’m 100% with Maidana,” De La Hoya stated as per esnewsreporting.com, “You never know because Mayweather is 37 years old. You age in boxing overnight.”

Oscar revealed that he may even have discussed strategy with Maidana prior to the first fight and that he has talked with the Argentinian very recently. Maidana stated on a prior media conference call that a former Mayweather foe told him before the first fight that Mayweather was susceptible to the jab, although he didn’t name the fighter. Based on Oscar’s comments, it is very likely he was the fighter Marcos was referring to.

“I saw Maidana three days ago, he told me ‘you were right, the jab!’,” Oscar said, “I hope Chino uses it on Saturday. Maidana looks great, he has a great team, he’s strong with the will to win.”

De La Hoya has openly rooted for many fighters in the past to dethrone Floyd, and several times has offered advice on how he feels Mayweather can be taken down. He attempted to assist Ricky Hatton, Victor Ortiz and Saul Alvarez to defeat Floyd among others. Floyd has however been able to beat one Golden Boy Promotions fighter after another which has heightened Oscar’s desire to see Mayweather finally take a loss.

Since his 2007 split decision defeat to Mayweather, Oscar has been adamant that a strong jab can get the job done against Floyd and he is strongly pulling for Maidana to use it with successful results tomorrow night.
