Mayweather and MaidanaBy Allan Fox: Tomorrow night, WBA/WBC welterweight champion Floyd Mayweather Jr (46-0, 26 KOs) will be looking for his 47th consecutive victory of his career in his rematch against Marcos Maidana (35-4, 31 KOs) in Las Vegas, Nevada.

This is a fight that some boxing fans are really looking forward to because of the excitement the first fight generated last May. Maidana showed that he’s got the fighting style and the power to give Mayweather a lot of problems the last time out when he blitzed the 37-year-old champion from the first round.

Mayweather says he was ready for Maidana’s aggressive attack, but obviously he chose the wrong tactics in the first part of the fight. Mayweather said in between rounds that Maidana was going to tire himself out which is exactly what happened in the fight. But it took such a long time that by the time he did fade, Maidana had already landed quite a few huge punches. Mayweather doesn’t want to get hit like that this time around, and that’s why we’re going to see him use adjustments to keep from getting nailed as much.

“I think he knows what to expect,” Rafael said to ESPN. “I think he can make adjustments this time around. I think he knows he can keep it in the center of the ring. I think he still has got great defensive skills. I don’t see him losing the fight. I think he wins the fight and wins it a lot easier than he did the first fight.”

Making adjustments is what Mayweather will be doing going into the fight. We’re going to see a much different Mayweather on Saturday than we did in their first fight. Maidana is going to need to have a good game plan to deal with what Mayweather is doing from the start because if he can’t deal with a more active, more mobile Mayweather in the center of the ring on Saturday night then it’s going to end badly for Maidana. He’s got to know that Mayweather won’t go to the ropes this time, and he won’t just stand in front of him like a statue to make things easy for him.
