Ryan Garcia appears to have put the problems behind him with Golden Boy Promotions boss Oscar De La Hoya. The lightweight contender Ryan says, “We’re cool now.”
The friction that the highly popular Ryan (24-1, 20 KOs) had with De La Hoya for not showing up at his post-fight press conference last year after his loss to Gervonta Davis appears to be resolved.
Recently, fans believed that Ryan, 25, wanted out of contract with Golden Boy and would sign with PBC. That wouldn’t be a good idea now, with the Premier Boxing Champions’ situation now looking stable.
Jumping on board, PBC could now see Ryan go down with the ship, with his career situation looking bleak. If the company goes under, Gervonta Davis, the PBC-managed fighter Garcia wants to fight, could be set adrift. That’ll make things easier for Ryan, provided he wins his next fight against Devin Haney.
Peacemaker Ryan
Ryan says he resolved the issue with De La Hoya by speaking with him on group chat and with other team members.
“I don’t like non-peaceful situations; I can’t live with that for too long. I put Oscar in a group chat with people from my team and said there are a lot of people who don’t like you, Oscar, and that’s causing me issues. I said if you guys don’t hash it out, I won’t work for any of you. I will beat it like Michael Jackson, and that fixed it,” said Ryan Garcia to Ariel Helwani’s YouTube channel.
Focus on Haney
It’s good that Garcia has mended fences with De La Hoya because the last thing Kingry needs is to have a troubled relationship with his promoter as he heads into his mega-fight against WBC light welterweight champion Devin Haney on April 20th on DAZN PPV from the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.
Ryan would need to see De La Hoya often during the press conferences in the build-up to his fight with Haney, and he doesn’t need to have that sense of unease each time he’s in his presence.
“When you don’t do what people want you to do, they take you out like a brat,” said Ryan Garcia. “I don’t want to get too into it; we’re cool now; I don’t want to rehash old wounds for him. We’re cool as heck. We text all the time. Shoutout, Oscar. He’s cool.”
