Ortiz-Thompson & Ali-Vargas this Saturday on HBO

ortiz111By Jeff Aranow: Interim WBA heavyweight champion Luis “The Real King Kong” Ortiz (24-0, 21 KOs) will be defending his title this Saturday night on March 5 on HBO Boxing against 44-year-old Tony Thompson (40-6, 27 KOs) in what should be an exciting match-up at the DC Armory, in Washington, District of Columbia.

In the co-feature bout is former WBA light welterweight champion Jessie Vargas (26-1, 9 KOs) facing unbeaten #1 WBO Sadam Ali (22-0, 13 KOs) in a fight for the vacant WBO welterweight title. This is the title that was recently vacated by Timothy Bradley, who opted to vacate the belt rather than defend it so that he could face Filipino star Manny Pacquiao on April 9 on HBO pay-per-view.

Jessie Vargas: Sadam Ali doesn’t have the experience I have

bradley77777By Tim Fletcher: Former WBA light welterweight champion Jessie Vargas (26-1, 9 KOs) may be coming off of a one-sided 12 round unanimous decision defeat in his last fight to former WBO 147lb champion Tim Bradley last June, but he’s now about to get another shot at a title in his fight against #1 WBO Sadam Ali (22-0. 13 KOs) for the now vacant WBO welterweight title on March 5 at the DC Armory, in Washington, District of Columbia.

The Ali-Vargas fight will be televised on HBO Championship Boxing in the co-feature bout on the Luis Ortiz vs. Tony Thompson card.

Vargas, 26, is going to need to up his work rate if he wants to beat Ali, because he didn’t throw enough punches in his last fight against Bradley. Vargas was throwing a lot of single shots and getting outworked by Bradley in the fight.

Jessie Vargas still wants Tim Bradley rematch

vargas986By Dan Ambrose: #5 WBO Jessie Vargas (26-1, 9 KOs) is upset about WBO 147lb champion Tim Bradley (33-1-1, 13 KOs) not saying anything about wanting to give him a rematch so that he can try and avenge his 12 round unanimous decision loss to him last June.

Vargas, 26, says that Bradley had said something about wanting to give him a rematch after their fight in the summer, but since then, Bradley has been quiet about wanting to fight him a second time. Vargas was at Bradley’s post-fight press conference last Saturday night after his win over Brandon Rios (33-3-1, 24 KOs).

Jessie Vargas appeals decision to CSAC for Bradley fight, wants ‘no contest’

vargas986By Dan Ambrose: As expected, #5 WBO Jessie Vargas (26-1, 9 KOs) has appealed his recent 12 round unanimous decision loss at the hands of Timothy Bradley (32-1-1, 12 KOs) from June 27th to the California State Athletic Commission (CSAC) to try and have them overturn the defeat and rule it a no contest.

Vargas believes that the mistake that referee Pat Russell made in halting the fight prematurely with 7 seconds remaining in the fight resulted in him not getting the chance to KO a badly hurt Bradley.

Bradley vs. Vargas decision is final, no rematch

bradley#1By Allan Fox: Jessie Vargas (26-1, 9 KOs) is going to have to live with his 12 round unanimous decision loss to Tim Bradley (32-1-1, 12 KOs) from last month on June 27th, as the World Boxing Organization has made the decision not to have the two fighters face each other again to clear up the controversy surrounding the premature ending of their fight at the StubHub Center in Carson, California.

The referee working the fight Pat Russell mistakenly stopped the fight with four seconds remaining after he thought he heard the final bell. Not only has the WBO ruled against a rematch, the California State Athletic Commission has decided not to change the results of the fight to a no contest, according to the Review Journal.

“Controversy” Tim Bradley survives the Vargas storm

bradley222By Yannis Mihanos: It seems that controversy and Tim “Desert Storm” Bradley (35-1-1-1) have finally become one and the same thing.

I might as well call him from now on Controversy Tim or at least he should consider changing his nickname to “Controversy”.

I really don’t know how Bradley manages to put himself into trouble every time, but he certainly has something special going on with it.

By Michael Montero: Saturday night Timothy “Desert Storm” Bradley scored a unanimous decision victory over previously undefeated Jessie Vargas at the StubHub Center, just outside of Los Angeles. HBO Championship Boxing, which is having an outstanding year so far, celebrated the broadcast of their thousandth bout. For Bradley, who won the 2013 fight of the year against Ruslan Provodnokov at this same venue, he added another exciting victory to his ledger.

Bradley-Vargas averages 1.121 million viewers on HBO

bradley77777By Dan Ambrose: Last Saturday’s clash between Tim Bradley (32-1-1, 12 KOs) and Jessie Vargas (26-1, 9 KOs) at 147lbs, brought in an average of 1.21 million viewers on HBO Championship Boxing, according to Dan Rafael of ESPN. The fight, which took place at the StubHub Center in Carson, California, peaked at a high of 1.228 million, it at No.9 in terms of the most viewed fight on HBO in 2015.

While that’s not exactly great, it’s still not bad considering how poor the fight was. It was a bad fight on paper coming into last Saturday, and the fight itself was a real disappointment until Vargas briefly hurt Bradley in the 12th round.

Bradley: I’ll fight Golovkin if my team wants me to

bradley555555By Dan Ambrose: WBO interim welterweight champion Tim Bradley (32-1-1, 12 KOs) says he’ll face WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (33-0, 30 KOs) next if that’s a fight that his team wants. Bradley, 31, says he’s not the one who makes the decision for his fights.

It’s a team effort involving his trainer Joel Diaz, his father, and of course his promoter Bob Arum. It’s unclear what Diaz and his father want for Bradley next, but it’s clear that Arum is very interested in Bradley facing Golovkin this year in September because he feels that it’s a fight that could be shown on pay-per-view.

Arum not sure if he’ll do Bradley-Vargas rematch

vargas986By Dan Ambrose: Top Rank promoter Bob Arum isn’t sure yet whether he’ll make the effort of putting together a rematch between interim WBO welterweight champion Tim Bradley (32-1-1, 12 KOs) and Jessie Vargas (26-1, 9 KOs).

Arum promotes both guys, so it wouldn’t be a big deal for him to put them back together again. But it might not work out well for Arum if he stages another fight again because it likely won’t draw big ratings due to the one-sided nature of their fight last Saturday night at the StubHub Center in Carson, California.
