Jesse Vargas vs. Ray Narh on October 11th

vargas43By Dan Ambrose: Unbeaten welterweight contender Jessie Vargas (22-0, 9 continues his slow methodical march to an eventual title shot when he faces Ray Narh (26-3, 21 KOs) next month on October 11th at the Thomas and Mack Center in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Vargas, #5 IBF, #9 WBC, #13 WBO, had to struggle hard to win his last fight against the big punching Wale Omotoso by a 10 round unanimous decision last March.

Vargas was dropped in the 2nd round by Osmotoso, and the outcome of the fight looked more like a draw or a win for Osmotoso, but the judges gave Vargas a fairly wide score of 97-92, 96-93 and 96-93. Vargas was the name guy, so it wasn’t surprising to see him get the nod in the fight.

Jessie Vargas vs. Wale Omotoso on Bradley-Provodnikov card on March 16th

vargas43By Dan Ambrose: A bout pitting unbeaten welterweights Wale Omotoso (23-0, 19 KO’s) vs. Jessie Vargas (23-0, 9 KO’s) will be on the undercard of WBO welterweight champion Tim Bradley’s first title defense against Ruslan Provodnikov on March 16th, according to Steve Kim. The fight card will be staged at the Home Depot Center in Carson, California, and HBO will likely be televising it.

Omotoso, #12 IBF, hasn’t faced any real quality opposition yet, so this will be a step up for him in a big way. Omotoso’s best opponents on his resume are Lanardo Tyner and Irving Garcia. Omotoso beat Tyner by an 8 round decision, and his fight with Garcia was stopped in the 2nd round due to a cut that Garcia suffered on his forehead from a clash of heads in the round. Omotoso does have decent power, but not enough to stop the better opposition.

vargas56020By Chris Williams: Top Rank is reportedly looking at matching their #1 fighter Manny Pacquiao against either former WBA World welterweight champion Vyacheslav Senchenko (33-1, 22 KO’s) or unbeaten welterweight contender Jessie Vargas (21-0, 9 KO’s) next on April 13th, according to the Manila Bulletin.

Both Senchenko and Vargas are also being considered for a fight against Juan Manuel Marquez on April 20th, so it’s possible that whoever is left over after Pacquiao and his promoter Bob Arum make their selection will end up facing Marquez.
