Jessie Vargas wants Miguel Cotto or Danny Garcia

1-AliVargas2_HoganphotosBy Dan Ambrose: WBO welterweight champion Jessie Vargas (27-1, 10 KOs) wants to cash in on him winning the vacant WBO 147lb title earlier this month by getting a fight against Miguel Cotto or WBC welterweight champion Danny Garcia (32-0, 18 KOs).

Cotto is looking for an opponent for his next fight in June. However, if he was interested in fighting Vargas, I think he would have already had his promoters at Roc Nation Sports contact him by now, don’t you think? Cotto must have other plans for his next fight rather than fighting the little known Vargas, who some boxing fans see as little more than a paper champion.

Jessie Vargas wants Cotto, Marquez and Danny Garcia

1-AliVargas3_HoganphotosBy Dan Ambrose: WBO welterweight champion Jessie Vargas (27-1, 10 KOs) is hoping to use his new WBO title victory over Sadam Ali to get a big name to fight him for his next fight. The 26-year-old Vargas specifically wants to fight Tim Bradley, Miguel Cotto, Danny Garcia or Juan Manuel Marquez. Vargas feels that if he beats someone like the 42-year-old Mexican warrior Marquez, he’ll become the new dog in town.

Marquez, Cotto, Garcia and Bradley would be doing Vargas a huge favor if they agreed to fight him. There’s no real upside for any of them to fight Vargas because he’s not a big name despite some of his fights being televised on HBO.

Vargas sees Pacquiao-Bradley as even fight

bradley5456By Chris Williams: Newly crowned WBO welterweight champion Jessie Vargas is giving Tim Bradley (33-1-1, 13 KOs) a great chance of beating the aging 37-year-old Manny Pacquiao (57-6-2, 38 KOs) in their third together on April 9 on HBO PPV.

Vargas, 26, believes that Pacquiao is aging and not the fighter he was eight years ago when he stopped Oscar De La Hoya in the 8th round. Vargas doesn’t think Pacquiao is the same fighter that defeated a past his best Antonio Margarito in 2010 in Texas. Vargas thinks Pacquiao has lost some of the energy that he once had that made him a good fighter.

Vargas figures that if Pacquiao couldn’t knockout Bradley in their first two fights, when he was a little younger than he is now, then he surely won’t be able to score a knockout of Bradley on April 9.

“It’s a 50-50 fight,” Vargas said to Rappler.com. “If Bradley ever had a chance, it’s right now. Manny Pacquiao’s on the decline and he doesn’t have the kind of strength he once possessed. I don’t think he’s the same fighter he was when he fought Oscar [De La Hoya], when he fought [Antonio] Margarito. I don’t think he has the same strength that he was dangerous for in the past.”

Arum wants Jessie Vargas vs. Juan Manuel Marquez

marquez6By Dan Ambrose: Top Rank promoter Bob Arum is interested in matching 42-year-old former four division world champion Juan Manuel Marquez (56-7-1, 40 KOs) against his new WBO welterweight champion Jessie Vargas (27-1, 10 KOs).

Arum is trying to turn the 26-year-old Vargas into a star. Marquez has wanted to capture a welterweight title for some time, and has failed in his two attempts at winning the title. Marquez was arguably robbed in his fight with Manny Pacquiao in 2011, and then beaten by Tim Bradley in 2013 in his second attempt to win a 147lb title.

Arum wants to match Vargas against the winner of the Manny Pacquiao vs. Tim Bradley fight. However, Pacquiao plans on retiring after his April 9 fight with Bradley, so that leaves only Bradley for Vargas.

Jessie Vargas: I want a rematch with Tim Bradley!

1-AliVargas3_HoganphotosBy Dan Ambrose: Last night, #4 WBO Jessie Vargas (27-1, 10 KOs) became a two-division world champion by beating the smaller, and weaker Sadam Ali (22-1, 13 KOs) by a 9th round knockout to claim the vacant WBO welterweight title at the DC Armory in Washington, DC.

After the fight, Vargas said he wants a rematch with Tim Bradley, who soundly beat him by a 12 round unanimous decision last June. The ending of their fight was controversial somewhat due to Vargas hurting Bradley in the 12th, and the referee blowing it by stopping the fight 10 seconds early thinking the fight had ended. Bradley would have clearly made it to the end regardless if the fight had gone on.

Vargas defeats Ali by 9th round TKO – results

vargas6By Jim Dower: Former WBA 140lb champion Jessie Vargas (27-1, 10 KOs) used his superior size and punching power to defeat #1 WBO Sadam Ali (22-1, 13 KOs) by a 9th round TKO night to capture the vacant WBO 140lb title in a fight televised by HBO World Boxing from the DC Armory in Washington, DC.

Vargas flattened a fading 27-year-old Ali in the 8th round. Ali made it up but was badly hurt. He was able to make it out of the round, but it was clear that he was not going to be able to last another round. Ali’s trainer asked him in between rounds if he wanted to have the fight stopped, but he chose to come out for the 9th.

In hindsight, that wasn’t a good idea because Vargas immediately all over him at the start of the 9th round. Vargas then finished Ali off with a flurry of shots after knocking him down one more time. Referee Kenny Chevalier stopped the contest at 2:09 of the round.

Jessie Vargas to reveal his new punching power tonight

Image: Jessie Vargas to reveal his new punching power tonightBy Allan Fox: Former WBA 140lb champion Jessie Vargas (26-1, 9 KOs) will be putting his new punching power on display tonight in his fight for the vacant WBO welterweight title against Sadam Ali (22-0, 13 KOs) at the DC Armory in Washington, DC. Vargas says he’s been working on his punching power lately, and he feels that Ali is not going to want to mix it up with him for long after he finds out how hard he can hit early in their contest tonight on HBO Boxing.

Vargas’ problem in his last fight against Tim Bradley wasn’t just a lack of punching power. Vargas also failed to throw enough punches to win. He was letting Bradley outwork him in every round of the fight.

Jessie Vargas plans on Stopping Sadam Ali tonight

Image: Jessie Vargas plans on Stopping Sadam Ali tonight(Photo: Tom Hogan – Hoganphotos/Golden Boy) By Dan Ambrose: Not known for his punching power, #4 WBO Jessie Vargas (26-1, 9 KOs) is surprisingly looking for a knockout in his fight tonight against #1 WBO Sadam Ali (22-0, 13 KOs) on HBO World Boxing from the DC Armory in Washington, DC.

Vargas and Ali will be battling it out for Tim Bradley’s recently vacated WBO welterweight title. With how limited looking both of these contenders are, it’s a wonderment that they’ll be fighting for the WBO 147lb title, because there are a number of contenders that would likely beat both of these guys with no problems.

Jessie Vargas – Sadam Ali fight for vacant WBO 147lb title

vargas222(Photo Credit: Louis Tinsley – Tom Hogan Photos/Golden Boy Promotions) By Allan Fox: Former WBA light welterweight champion Jessie Vargas (26-1, 9 KOs) will be trying to become a two division world champion this Saturday night in his fight against unbeaten #1 WBO Sadam Ali (22-0, 9 KOs) in a clash for the vacant WBO welterweight title on HBO Boxing After ark at the DC Armory in Washington, DC.

Vargas and Ali will be fighting for the WBO title that was vacated recently by Timothy Bradley. The Ali-Vargas fight is the co-feature bout on the Luis Ortiz vs. Tony Thompson card.

While the 27-year-old Ali is well deserving of a world title shot due to his unbeaten record and recent wins over Francisco Santana and Luis Carlos Abregu, you can’t say the same thing about Vargas.
