Roach: Chavez Jr. could have beaten Martinez if he started earlier

Image: Roach: Chavez Jr. could have beaten Martinez if he started earlierBy Scott Gilfoid: Freddie Roach still feels Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. could have knocked Sergio Martinez if only Chavez Jr. had started a little earlier int he fight with his offensive attack. It kind of reminds me of old fisherman talking about the big fish that got away. If only, he would done this or that, he would have caught that prize-winning fish. Roach is the way.

Roach said to Radio Raheem “If we could have done that [fighting hard] in the 6th and we would have knocked this guy out.”

Nevada Commission confirms Chavez Jr’s positive marijuana test result

Image: Nevada Commission confirms Chavez Jr's positive marijuana test resultBy Dan Ambrose: The Nevada State Athletic Commission has now officially confirmed the positive test results for former WBC middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. for metabolites of marijuana. This puts to rest the WBC president Jose Sulaiman’s desire to wait until another test had been done before considering Chavez Jr. as having tested positive for the banned drug.

Keith Kizer, the executive director of the Nevada State Athletic Commission, told RingTV “We have received all the test results, both pre and post fight tests…There are no additional charges. We will just have one complaint against Julio for marijuana.”

Sulaiman unhappy that Chavez Jr’s positive marijuana test was made public

Image: Sulaiman unhappy that Chavez Jr's positive marijuana test was made publicBy Dan Ambrose: WBC president Jose Sulaiman isn’t pleased that news has leaked out about former WBC middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. testing positive for marijuana following his 12 round decision loss to Sergio Martinez last Saturday. Sulaiman, who is close to Chavez Jr., feels that the test results should have been kept secret until after a second test had been done to confirm the results.

Sulaiman said to Philboxing.com “Whoever released that note has committed a serious violation of confidentiality. According to anti-doping regulations, only the boxer, the Boxing Commission and the World Boxing Council, can be notified about the positive results.”

Chavez Jr-Martinez official numbers: 475,000 PPV buys

Image: Chavez Jr-Martinez official numbers: 475,000 PPV buysBy Dan Ambrose: Top Rank promoter Bob Arum almost hit his pay per view projections dead center with his prediction that the Julio Cesar Chavez Jr vs. Sergio Martinez fight would draw between 500,000 to 600,000 pay per view buys. According to Dan Rafael of ESPN, HBO is reporting that the official numbers are 475,000 PPV buys for the Martinez-Chavez Jr. fight last Saturday night. Of that total, 250,000 came from satellite and 225,000 from cable and telco. The fight brought in a huge $25 million. Not bad.

No wonder Arum, who promotes Chavez Jr, and Lou Dibella, the promoter for Martinez, badly want to have the fighters get it on again in a rematch next year at the Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas.

Sergio Martinez shocked at Chavez Jr’s positive test for Marijuana

Image: Sergio Martinez shocked at Chavez Jr's positive test for MarijuanaBy Dan Ambrose: WBC middleweight champ Sergio Martinez (50-2-2, 28 KO’s) finds it hard to believe that Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (46-1-1, 32 KO’s) has tested positive for marijuana from their fight last Saturday night in Vegas. Martinez doesn’t want to believe it and hopes that his rematch with the 26-year-old Chavez Jr. can still go through in the first part of next year at the Cowboys Stadium in Texas, as planned by his promoter Lou Dibella.

As quoted by the record.com.mex from Mexican newspaper “The Hobby,” Martinez said “Maybe it’s a misunderstanding. [Hopefully] this does not directly affect a possible rematch between us. It took me by surprise. It’s very sad when an athlete tests positive. Whatever life we have, we have to lead by example…I have no idea what will happen.”

Is it time for Roach to pull the plug on Chavez Jr?

Image: Is it time for Roach to pull the plug on Chavez Jr?By John F. McKenna (McJack): With the announcement that former World Boxing Council (WBC) middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (46-1-1, 32 KO’s) tested positive for marijuana in a post fight urine sample following his fight last Saturday night with new WBC champion Sergio Martinez (50-2-2, 28 KO’s) it is now clear that Julio has become a problem child for trainer Freddie Roach.

The full ramifications of the positive test are not yet known, but it has been speculated that Chavez may lose the $3 million dollar purse he earned for the fight and could possibly face a one year suspension.

Sergio Martinez, Mayweather, Andre Ward

Image: Sergio Martinez, Mayweather, Andre WardBy Robert Elmore: Sergio Martinez put on a clinic against Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. last weekend and many are clamoring for a rematch. There is no need for one. Freddie Roach has done a decent job with Chavez, but Freddie doesn’t teach fundamentals. That coupled with the fact Julio’s weight is not always intact and Chavez doing what he wants to at almost every turn when it comes to training.

Team Martinez refuses to go up to the super middleweight division but is willing to shrink himself down to 154 for Mayweather and 152 for Pacquiao The word is that the new WBC rules will not allow their title holder to unify the belts from rival sanctioning body. So I guess we’ll see Martinez fight against some tomato cans or fight a big name in a non-title fight.

Bernard Hopkins: Chavez Jr. is nothing but a gimmick

Image: Bernard Hopkins: Chavez Jr. is nothing but a gimmickBy Allan Fox: Former middleweight champion Bernard Hopkins got a little annoyed at the constant questions about former WBC middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. the other day on his twitter and finally snapped at one of the posters saying:

“Stop asking me about Chavez Jr. He ain’t nothing but a gimmick. He don’t [know] that this is serious.”

What Hopkins meant by referring to Chavez Jr. as a “Gimmick” is unclear, because Hopkins failed to elaborate on that. He could possibly be referring to Chavez Jr. being popular in large part due to his famous father Julio Cesar Chavez Sr., a former world champion and one of the most popular fighters in Mexican boxing history. Chavez Jr. has gained some portions of his fame obviously from fans of his father.

Chavez Jr-Martinez fight PPV numbers between 500,000 to 600,000 buys, says Arum

Image: Chavez Jr-Martinez fight PPV numbers between 500,000 to 600,000 buys, says ArumBy Dan Ambrose: It looks like last Saturday’s fight between former WBC middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. and Sergio Martinez has done better than what a lot of people thought it would do in terms of pay per view buys on HBO. The fight was only expected to draw 250,000 PPV buys, which would put it well below the usual 1 million buys that mega stars Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Manny Pacquiao regularly get for their fights on pay per view.

Bob Arum, the promoter for Chavez Jr, is reporting that his fight with Martinez last Saturday night hauled in between 500,000 to 600,000 buys, according to Dan Rafael of ESPN. That’s a lot of money for a couple of guys who have yet to establish themselves as PPV fighters. Martinez isn’t hugely popular, and Chavez Jr. is mainly popular in the Hispanic community.
