Image: Sergio Martinez, Mayweather, Andre WardBy Robert Elmore: Sergio Martinez put on a clinic against Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. last weekend and many are clamoring for a rematch. There is no need for one. Freddie Roach has done a decent job with Chavez, but Freddie doesn’t teach fundamentals. That coupled with the fact Julio’s weight is not always intact and Chavez doing what he wants to at almost every turn when it comes to training.

Team Martinez refuses to go up to the super middleweight division but is willing to shrink himself down to 154 for Mayweather and 152 for Pacquiao The word is that the new WBC rules will not allow their title holder to unify the belts from rival sanctioning body. So I guess we’ll see Martinez fight against some tomato cans or fight a big name in a non-title fight.

I have no problems with Martinez, but all the excuses for the weight, I’m not buying it. 30 days before, Martinez –Paul Williams 2 took place, Martinez was 176 pounds. Can anybody say light heavyweight? And Sergio also weighed 174 pounds one month before their fight. So this tells me Sergio walks around at 180 pounds or bigger. In my opinion, Sergio can fight at super middle weight, but doesn’t want to for whatever reason.

But what is interesting is that he is willing to “shrink himself” to fight Mayweather at 154. Can anybody say excuses in weight if Mayweather and Martinez fight and Mayweather wins? Many claim Mayweather is scared to fight Sergio. So is it also fair to say that Martinez is scared to move up to the super middle weight division?

Mayweather and Ward: Great fundamentalist

There is a reason that Mayweather and Ward are undefeated thus far in their careers. They are solid in their fundamentals. People call their style boring, but they are still very effective. Mayweather is the third most accurate puncher in the game landing 46 percent of his punches while his opponents land only 16 percent of theirs. I don’t have the numbers on Ward, but he displayed great defensive and offensive skills against Carl Froch and definitely against Chad Dawson.

These two fighters are much disciplined in their craft and do not allow other fighters to get them out of their game plan. They don’t waste punches and one never sees them sucking wind when the fight is over. Ward seems to the future of boxing. Hopefully he can expand on his fan base, get bigger pay days , and end his career on a high note.
