Image: Roach: Chavez Jr. would have KO'd Sergio Martinez in 6 rounds if he had trained betterBy Dan Ambrose: Before news leaked about former WBC middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. allegedly testing positive for Marijuana after his fight last Saturday night against Sergio Martinez, Chavez Jr’s trainer Freddie Roach was already busy making excuses for Chavez Jr’s loss and saying he would have won by KO if he had trained better.

Roach said to Radio Raheem “I think if we had a better training camp we would have knocked him out in six rounds. We gave that fight away. My guy [Chavez Jr] was the bigger, stronger and better fighter.”

Sergio Martinez to undergo surgery next week

Image: Sergio Martinez to undergo surgery next weekBy Allan Fox: WBC middleweight champion Sergio Martinez (50-2-2, 28 KO’s) will reportedly be undergoing surgery next week in Spain to repair damage to his right knee that he suffered before his win over former WBC middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (46-1-1, 32 KO’s) last Saturday night in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Martinez, 37, came into the Chavez Jr. fight with a possible tear of his Meniscus cartilage in his right knee. During the 12th, Martinez aggravated it when he was knocked down by Chavez Jr. The knee will now have to be operated on and depending on the extent of the injuries, Martinez will likely be out of action for at least four months recovering from the surgery while he slowly heals. He’ll have to strengthen the knee afterwards before he’ll be ready to return to action.

Sergio Martinez-Modern Day Great and deserving of a ranking of #4 in the P4P list?

Image: Sergio Martinez-Modern Day Great and deserving of a ranking of #4 in the P4P list?By Jack Granard: Like many of you recently, I watched Sergio Martinez outclass and outbox Julio Cesar Chavez Jnr in a less than enticing boxing clash. The victory and the general performance prompted many people to observe Martinez as deservedly the best in the division, as well as perhaps a modern day great.

Furthermore it added strength to his status as #4 in the P4P ring magazine rankings. However it is hard to argue whether or not “Maravilla” is really a modern day great or a legend, his record dictates victories against Pavlik, Williams, previously unbeaten Dzinziruk, Macklin and Barker, as well as a draw against Cintron. Although it is safe to say he is the best in the division, these victories against this type of opposition do not suggest that he is the 4th best boxer in boxing nor a modern day great. Throughout this argument I will give a balanced and nuanced analysis as to why it can be perceived in this light or in the opposite view.

Is age catching up with Sergio Martinez?

Image: Is age catching up with Sergio Martinez?By Gerardo Granados: The new World Boxing Council (WBC) middleweight champion southpaw Argentinean Sergio “Maravilla” Martinez has been reported to need surgery on his right knee to repair torn ligaments and broken meniscus, injuries that may have resulted from his fight against Julio Cesar Chavez Jr., Sergio also broke his left hand and being a southpaw this is his strong arm and most useful weapon.

Of course it won’t matter how old or young you are to break your hand if the hand wraps are not right or if you hit the forehead or an elbow. But obviously when you grow older it will be more probable to break a bone.

Image: Roach unhappy that Chavez Jr. failed to follow his instructions during the Martinez fightBy Dan Ambrose: Trainer Freddie Roach is slowly revealing how unhappy he is with his fighter former WBC middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. with which he went about getting ready for his September 15th title defense against Sergio Martinez. Roach told espndeportes.com “He left me in the gym when he wanted, he trained at home or simply not at all. It’s also unacceptable that during the fight he didn’t follow instructions”

Image: Dibella: Would Chavez Jr. have been around in the 12th if Martinez hadn't broke his hand in the 4th?By Dan Ambrose: Lou Dibella, the promoter for newly crowned WBC middleweight champion Sergio “Maravilla” Martinez (50-2-2, 28 KO’s), doesn’t have any doubts that Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (46-1-1, 32 KO’s) would have never even seen the 12th round had Martinez not broken his left power hand in the 4th round and been forced to use it without power in the last 8 rounds.

Dibella said on his twitter page “Would Jr. have been around in the 12th if Sergio didn’t break his left in the 4th? Power lefts and kid [Chavez Jr] would have been gone.”
