Chavez Jr. still the first choice for Sergio Martinez’s next fight

Image: Chavez Jr. still the first choice for Sergio Martinez's next fightBy Dan Ambrose: Sampson Lewkowicz, the manager for WBC middleweight champion Sergio Martinez (50-2-2, 28 KO’s), says that former WBC middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (46-1-1, 32 KO’s) is still the leading candidate for the 37-year-old Martinez’s next fight in 2013 despite the wait that might be involved in getting to that fight. The 26-year-old Chavez Jr. is facing a suspension for testing positive for marijuana in his last fight agaisnt Martinez on September 15th.

Lewkowicz is kicking around the idea of trying to state the Chavez Jr-Martinez II fight in Argentina rather than the United States. Martinez comes from Argentina and has a a lot of fans there that he could potentially count on filling a stadium to see him fight Chavez Jr. again.

Chavez Jr. has to improve dramatically to beat Martinez in a rematch

Image: Chavez Jr. has to improve dramatically to beat Martinez in a rematchBy Dan Ambrose: Bob Arum, the promoter for former WBC middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (46-1-1, 32 KO’s) is pretty excited about the idea of putting the 26-year-old Chavez Jr. back in with Sergio Martinez (50-2-2, 28 KO’s) for a rematch in early 2013, possibly at the Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas.

Arum might want to think twice about putting Chavez Jr. in that fight if he’s thinking about his long term health. Chavez Jr. needs to improve monumentally before he’s thrown out there with Martinez again, because he little more than just a huge 180+ pound punching bag for 11 rounds until getting lucky in the 12th and dropping Martinez on September 15th of this month. Chavez Jr. a ton of punishment in that fight, and it would likely been a lot worse for him had Martinez not broken his left hand in the 4th round causing him to lighten up on his left hand shots.

According to ESPN, Sampson Lewkowicz, the adviser for Martinez, said that that Martinez’s knee may only need rehab rather than surgery.

Lewkowicz told Dan Rafael at ESPN “He [Martinez] needs another test or another MRI so he can decide if he needs the operation or if he can just go through treatment and rehabilitation…They will make that decision next week.”

Golovkin not likely to get Sergio Martinez or Chavez Jr. fight

Image: Golovkin not likely to get Sergio Martinez or Chavez Jr. fightBy Allan Fox: With the huge pay per view numbers that the Sergio Martinez vs. Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. hauled in for their September 15th fight in Las Vegas, it’s likely that when Chavez Jr’s upcoming suspension has been completed, he and Martinez will fight a rematch without facing anyone else in between. This means that WBA World middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (24-0, 21 KO’s) won’t be getting a shot against either Chavez Jr. or Sergio Martinez any time soon, perhaps even after they fight for a second time.

It’s unfortunate but Golovkin is too dangerous because of his power and skills for Chavez Jr. or Martinez to risk fighting him. No doubt they would be willing to fight Golovkin if he had a huge fan base in the United States, but he doesn’t. Golvokin is still slowly building his fan base and it might take years for him to get to the point where Chavez Jr. and Martinez will want to fight him.

Chavez Jr. fined $10,000 by WBC, but with no suspension

Image: Chavez Jr. fined $10,000 by WBC, but with no suspensionBy Dan Ambrose: The World Boxing Council president Jose Sulaiman is letting former WBC middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. off fairly lighting by ASKING him to attend rehabilitation to get treatment after his positive test for marijuana earlier this month for his fight with Sergio Martinez on September 15th.

The WBC will also be fining Chavez Jr. $10,000, which is light compared to what he could end up receiving from the Nevada State Athletic Commission when it’s their turn to fine the young Chavez Jr. The kicker here is that the WBC won’t be giving Chavez Jr. any suspension at all, period. That’s mighty nice of Sulaiman and the WBC, isn’t it?

Ward surprised by Chavez Jr’s lack of effort against Sergio Martinez

Image: Ward surprised by Chavez Jr's lack of effort against Sergio MartinezBy Dan Ambrose: WBA/WBC super middleweight champion Andre Ward was really surprised by how poorly former WBC middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. fought against Sergio Martinez in losing his World Boxing Council 160 pound title on September 15th. Ward said he expected a much better effort from Chavez Jr. in that fight than what he showed.

Speaking to Jim Lampley on HBO’s The Fight Game, Ward said “The surprising thing that happened was that Chavez didn’t put up the kind of fight that people thought he would. I don’t know if that happens to do with the recent news that came out [about Chavez Jr’s positive test for marijuana metabolites]. I expected Martinez to do what he did, but I expected a little bit more from Chavez Jr.”
