Adrien Broner vs. Yuriorkis Gamboa Anytime in the Future

broner567By Ryan Wardle: Last Saturday at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, New Jersey Adrien Broner ( 26-0, 22 KOs) predictably slaughtered Gavin Rees, forcing his corner to call a stop to the bout at the end of the 5th round. Rees came ready to fight and won the first two rounds on many viewer’s scorecards. However, Rees was outmatched once Broner began to pick him up towards the end of the 2nd round and was dominated from round 3 and on.

Adrien Broner has a rare combination of skills. Broner possesses natural talent, power, fast hands, and a good defense. His personality is polarizing and those who are not his fans are likely those who despise him. His skills to this point are undeniable, but there have been questions about the level of opposition he has faced. In his biggest fight to date, he demolished Antonio Demarco in 8 rounds to capture the WBC lightweight belt. At the time Demarco was considered the best lightweight.

Adrien Broner talks Gamboa and Rios

broner10By Scott Gilfoid: Adrien Broner (26-0, 22 KO’s) says he’s open to fighting Brandon Rios and Yuriorkis Gamboa in the future, but he has conditions for a fight with Gamboa. Broner wants to make sure Gamboa to be tested for performance enhancing drugs to where he’s clean before he’ll agree to fight him. As for Rios, Broner is leaving that fight up to his promoters to make.

Broner said at the post-fight press conference last night “Yuriorkis Gamboa is fighting PEDs [performance enhancing drugs]. I don’t want to hear about Yuriorkis Gamboa. Tell him to go get his piss clean, and then he can come talk to Adrien Broner. Other than that, he’s done. If Brandon Rios wants to fight me, we can fight. I don’t make my fights. I fight whoever they put in front of me.”

Bradley vs. Gamboa negotiations: Yuriorkis wants 143 lb catchweight

gamboa4523By Dan Ambrose: WBO welterweight champion Tim Bradley (29-0, 12 KO’s) is reportedly bumping heads still with Yuriorkis Gamboa (22-0, 16 KO’s) over the weight for their March 16th fight. The two sides want different catchweight limits and thus far they’ve failed to agree on one that will work for the fight.

The 31-year-old Gamboa wants a catchweight of 143 pounds, which sounds like a good number given that he’s moving up three divisions to take the fight from the super featherweight division. Bradley, however, only wants a small catchweight of only two pounds at 145 lbs.

It’s not much of a catchweight and it’s understand why Bradley is interested in moving down only two pounds when his opponent is already moving up in weight three divisions.

Robert Garcia: I think Mikey would beat Gamboa

garcia0By Dan Ambrose: Robert Garcia, the trainer for newly crowned WBO featherweight champion Mikey Garcia (31-0, 26 KO’s), told RingTV he’s hoping that Yuriorkis Gamboa (22-0, 16 KO’s) will agree to accept the challenge made by Mikey to either come down to featherweight and fight him or fight him at a catch in 2013. Robert Garcia believes Mikey can beat Gamboa.

Whether Gamboa accepts the offer made by Mikey is unknown at this point but it likely will be determined by what happens with Gamboa’s negotiations for a fight with WBO welterweight champion Tim Bradley.

If Gamboa can get that fight then he won’t need the smaller payday fighters like Mikey. Even though is technically a world champion now, he’s a champion in a division that’s not a real big draw in boxing in the United States. Gamboa is doing the smart thing in trying to move up in weight to get the bigger money fights at welterweight.

Mikey Garcia wants Gamboa next; willing to fight him at a catch weight

garcia4By Dan Ambrose: Newly crowned WBO featherweight champion Mikey Garcia (31-0, 26 KO’s) defeated Orlando Salido (39-12-2, 27 KO’s) and won his WBO strap by a head-butt that caused an eight round technical decision. After the fight, Mikey called out former two time featherweight champion Yuriorkis Gamboa, saying he’d be willing to fight him at a catchweight.

The chances of Mikey, who isn’t a big name, getting the Gamboa fight will likely come down to whether Gamboa can get a title shot against WBO welterweight champion Timothy Bradley. That’s the fight that Gamboa wants considering it’ll pay a lot more than fighting Mikey.

However, if Gamboa can’t get the fight with Bradley, then he might want to take the fight with Mikey, and I think Gamboa wins that fight as long as he doesn’t get knocked out. That’s the only way Mikey can beat Gamboa seeing that he’s a lot faster than Mikey, and he’s got power almost as good.

Tim Bradley vs. Yuriorkis Gamboa fight won’t happen unless they can agree on the weight

gamboa434By Dan Ambrose: According to Steve Kim, the proposed fight between super featherweight Yuriorkis Gamboa and WBO welterweight champion Tim Bradley (29-0, 16 KO’s) is coming down to whether the two fighters can agree on a weight between 140 and 147.

Gamboa, 31, is moving up from 130 at super featherweight to take the fight, but he’s going to need a catch weight 140 to 143 lbs for the fight to take place. Kim says he’s hearing that this likely won’t happen. In other words, Bradley won’t agree to fight Gamboa at a catch weight. That’s too bad considering Bradley already turned down a rematch against Lamont Peterson last December that would have given him a big payday of $2.3 million, according to Dan Rafael of ESPN.

50 Cent wants Gamboa vs. Broner in 2013

Image: 50 Cent wants Gamboa vs. Broner in 2013By Dan Ambrose: Buoyed by his fighter Yuriokis Gamboa’s tougher than expected 12 round unanimous decision victory over Michael Farenas to claim the interim WBA World super featherweight title last Saturday night at the MGM Grand, in Las Vegas, Nevada, promoter 50 Cent [AKA Curtis Jackson] said he’d like to put together a fight between the 30-year-old Gamboa and the 23-year-old WBC lightweight champion Adrien Broner (25-0, 21 KO’s) in 2013.

50 Cent wants Gamboa vs. Broner bout

Image: 50 Cent wants Gamboa vs. Broner boutBy Dan Ambrose: Promoter 50 Cent [AKA Curtis Jackson] is interested in matching two-time featherweight champion Yuriorkis Gamboa (21-0, 16 KO’s) up against WBC lightweight champion Adrien Broner (25-0, 21 KO’s) in the near future, and 50 Cent thinks it would be a huge fight like a Mayweather vs. Pacquiao type of mega fight.

50 Cent said to RingTV “Adrien Broner and Gamboa would be a fight to watch. I think that’s exciting. It could turn into the new Floyd Mayweather-Manny Pacquiao.”

For that fight to happen, Gamboa, 5’5”, will have to follow Broner up to light welterweight or possibly even welterweight to make it happen. It’s highly doubtful that Gamboa, as good as he is, can do much at 140 or 147. Gamboa would be too small in those weight classes, and it would be Jose Miguel Cotto, the 5’5” brother of Miguel Cotto, trying to fight at welterweight.
