Yuriorkis Gamboa To Face Al Seeger On Friday

gamboa23232.jpgBy Dan Ambrose: Undefeated super featherweight Yuriorkis Gamboa (10-0, 8 KOs) will be facing Al Seeger (27-3, 21 KOs) in a scheduled 10-round bout at the Buffalo Bill’s Resort & Casino in Primm, Nevada on Friday night. Gamboa, 26, a former 2004 Olympic Gold Medalist from Cuba, was originally scheduled to face WBA number #2 ranked super featherweight Jose Rojas, but he pulled out suddenly, making the need to find a last minute replacement for the fight. Seeger, 28, a super bantamweight was found to replace Gamboa. Seeger has lost his last two bouts, being defeated by Daniel Ponce de Leon and Mike Oliver, so one could conclude that this fight may be over very early with Gamboa quickly destroying Seeger in a round or two.

Gamboa, 26, ranked #3 in the WBA and WBC, is coming off a disappointing performance in his last bout in May against Darling Jimenez, in which Gamboa was knocked down in the 4th round of the bout, but eventually won the fight by a 10-round unanimous decision. Gamboa, a fighter that is known for his quick knockouts and heavy pressure, showed signs of wearing down as early as the 5th round against Jimenez. As he usually does, Gamboa bum rushed Jimenez early in the fight, throwing a down pour of punches in hopes of scoring another quick knockout, but Jimenez, a tough fighter with a good chin, had little problem handling Gamboa’s shots, and then began landing even bigger shots of his own. In the 4th round, an already tired-looking Gamboa was knocked down by a big right hand from Jimenez.

Gamboa’s Trainer Dismissed

gamboa57574.jpgBy William MacKay: In the latest boxing news, super featherweight Yuriorkis Gamboa’s trainer was apparently dismissed following last Saturday’s fight with Darling Jimenez in Las Vegas, a bout in which Gamboa was knocked down in the 4th round and hit often throughout the 10-round bout. Though Gamboa showed impressive offensive skills, his defense was what seemed to turn off many of the fans in the arena and those watching at home, for he held his hands low at his sides and was hit much too often for a fighter as ranked as high as he is (#5 in the WBC).

After the fight, Gamboa’s promoter Ahmet Oner reportedly let trainer Osmiri Fernandez go, replacing him with Orlando Cueller. Obviously, something had to be done, but this should have been noticed – Gamboa’s lack of defense – early on and should have been corrected well before he got to this stage.

Gamboa Defeats Jimenez, Fails To Impress

gamboa4573287.jpgBy Aaron Klein: Undefeated super featherweight prospect Yuriorkis Gamboa (10-0, 8 KOs) had a less than thrilling performance on Saturday night, as he struggled to defeat his best opponent to date Darling Jimenez (23-3-2, 14 KOs) by a 10-round unanimous decision at the Buffalo Bills Hotel, in Primm, Nevada. The final judges’ scores were 97-92, 97-92 and 99-91, all for Gamboa. For the most part, Gamboa landed the many more punches in the fight.

However, where he failed to impress was on defense as he allowed Jimenez to land some big shots against him, getting knocked down by him in the fourth round after getting hit with a big right to the head. Gamboa, a former 2004 Olympic Gold Medalist in the flyweight division for the Cuban National team, started off well in the first two rounds of the fight, swarming Jimenez and hitting him with blistering shots over and over. It seemed as if the fight wouldn’t go long during those two rounds because Gamboa looked light years better than Jimenez. However, when Jimenez was still standing by the 3rd round, both Gamboa’s offense and energy seemed to drop off a shade, making him look less like a future star and more like just a good fighter.

Boxing Results: Huck and Frenkel victorious; Gamboa Wins

Yuriorkis Gamboa beat Darling Jimenez to win the vacant WBC international super featherweight championship. “El Ciclon de Guantanamo” dominated most of the fight but was down in the fourth when Jimenez caught him with a left. ARENA-CEO Ahmet Öner: “Gamboa is a complete fighter but tonight I was not happy with his performance. He was a little bit too arrogant and gave me a hard time. You must not forget that it was only his 10th pro-fight though. He has got to improve his defence but he will definitely be world champion one day. After all I am glad that he had to go the distance. That was an important experience for him.”

Is Gamboa Already Better Than Pacquiao?

gamboa23442241.jpgBy Manuel Perez: 2004 Cuban amateur Gold Medalist super featherweight Yuriorkis Gamboa (9-0, 8 KOs) meets up this weekend with Darling Jimenez (23-2, 14 KOs) at the Buffalo Bills Hotel, in Primm, Nevada. After only nine fights, many people, this writer included, feel that Gamboa is already the best super featherweight in the division, even better than champion Manny Pacquiao and former champion Juan Manuel Marquez. While this is only speculation on most people’s part, the evidence seems to suggest that Gamboa is already far better than Pacquiao in terms of talent, and well on his way to being more popular than him, at least in the U.S., if not the Philippines where Pacquiao resides.

If you’re why people feel so strongly about Gamboa, it only takes a couple of views of his fights to figure why. He has knockout power in either hand, and doesn’t waste time in his bouts with all the preliminary feeling out period in the first couple of rounds. Instead he goes right after his opponent like there’s no tomorrow, trying to take him out with every shot. It’s clear that he’s a harder puncher than Pacquiao, though he’s not nearly as fast as him in terms of hand speed.

Gamboa vs. Jimenez This Saturday

gamboa3353.jpgBy Manuel Perez: Undefeated former 2004 Cuban amateur Gold Medalist super featherweight Yuriorkis Gamboa (9-0, 8 KOs) takes a big leap up in competition this Saturday against Darling Jimenez (23-2, 14 KOs) in a 10-round bout at the Buffalo Bills Hotel, in Primm, Nevada. Gamboa, 26 has quickly risen up the rankings in the super featherweight division since turning professional last year in April 2007, winning eight of his nine bouts by knockout. Though he’s only fought nine times, Gamboa is already ranked #5 in the WBC and #3 in the WBA, and is thought by many to be even better than the top super featherweights in the division, such as Manny Pacquiao, Juan Manuel Marquez and Edwin Valero.

It’s still too early to tell due to the mostly soft opposition that Gamboa has been placed in with but he looks so far to have the goods to be a future champion in a short while. What makes Gamboa so appealing as a fighter is that he fights like he has a train to catch, not wasting any time with the typical feeling out period that most boxers use in the opening moments of their fights.

Gamboa Destroys Paniagua

gamboa2344224.jpgFormer 2004 Cuban Olympic featherweight Gold medallist Yuriorkis Gamboa (5-0, 4 KOs) flattened Argentinian Nestor Hugo Paniagua (17-4-1, 14 KOs) in little over one minute of the 1st round on Friday night in Hansehalle, Luebeck, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany. Gamboa, 25, knocked Paniagua with a left-right combination seconds into the fight. After getting up, Gamboa was immediately on him pounding him with combinations and driving him across the ring.

After reaching the ropes, Paniagua attempted helplessly to cover up, but it was no good, as Gamboa unloaded on him with a barrage of punches that knocked Paniagua down to the bottom rope where he hung there as Gamboa dished out another four shots at the helpless and hurt Paniagua.

By the time the referee Heinrich Muehmert moved in to stop the fight, Paniagua was badly hurt from Gamboa’s final shots. The bout was officially stopped at 1:05 of the 1st round.
