Cruiserweight tournament likely participants: Huck, Cunningham, Wlodarczyk, Jones or Herelius

Image: Cruiserweight tournament likely participants: Huck, Cunningham, Wlodarczyk, Jones or HereliusBy Jason Kim: The proposed cruiserweight tournament could take place in 2011 but instead of having six participants, it’s possibly going to be only four, according Dan Rafael of ESPN. The fighters that will possibly be taking part in the tournament are Steve Cunningham, Marco Huck, Krzysztof Wlodarczyk, Guillermo Jones or Steve Herelius. The cruiserweight champions are currently getting their mandatory title defenses out of the way before the tournament begins. Huck recently defeated Denis Lebedev by a highly questionable 12 round decision in Germany. Cunningham has a title defense against Enad Licina on January 22nd. Wlodarczyk defends his WBC title against Francisco Palacios in April.

Why didn’t Danny Green go after Huck, Lebedev or Cunningham instead of Flores?

By Jim Slattengren: While I think Danny Green (30-3, 27 KO’s) is an excellent fighter, I’m not pleased to learn that he’s taking on BJ Flores (24-0-1, 15 KO’s) in his next fight on November 17th, in Sydney, Australia. Can the cruiserweight Super Six succeed?

By William Mackay: Promotional company Sauerland Events is interested in putting together a cruiserweight Super Six tournament with the similar idea as Showtime’s Super Six tournament for super middleweights. In this case, Sauerland is picking the cruiserweight division, one of the weakest in all of boxing to showcase six lucky fighters. The fighters that have been mentioned for the tournament are as follows: Danny Green, Steve Cunningham, Enzo Maccarinelli, Krsysztof Wlodarczyk, Marco Huck and Yoan Pablo Hernandez. I’m not sure this will work as well as the existing Super Six tournament because there’s only one American involved rather than two. I noticed that there are two German based fighters in Sauerland’s proposed cruiserweight tournament with Huck and Hernandez.
