Image: Cruiserweight tournament likely participants: Huck, Cunningham, Wlodarczyk, Jones or HereliusBy Jason Kim: The proposed cruiserweight tournament could take place in 2011 but instead of having six participants, it’s possibly going to be only four, according Dan Rafael of ESPN. The fighters that will possibly be taking part in the tournament are Steve Cunningham, Marco Huck, Krzysztof Wlodarczyk, Guillermo Jones or Steve Herelius. The cruiserweight champions are currently getting their mandatory title defenses out of the way before the tournament begins. Huck recently defeated Denis Lebedev by a highly questionable 12 round decision in Germany. Cunningham has a title defense against Enad Licina on January 22nd. Wlodarczyk defends his WBC title against Francisco Palacios in April.

It’s hard to get excited about a four-man tournament, especially if Lebedev, who I feel is the best fighter in the cruiserweight division by far, doesn’t take part in the tourney. Having Huck in the tournament seems silly given that he appeared to lose to Lebedev by at least four rounds. I had it much more lopsided than that. Huck doesn’t belong in the tournament as a champion in my view, and without Lebedev in the tourney, this isn’t a tournament to pick out best fighter in the division because Lebedev dominated Huck.

I see this tournament as one that will pick out the number #2 fighter in the division. The winner could then fight the number #1 fighter, who I feel is Lebedev. I’m also skeptical about this tournament because I’m afraid we might see some more controversial decisions like the Huck-Lebedev fight. I can see Huck winning the tournament unless he gets knocked out, because I think it would be incredibly tough for anyone go into Germany and win a decision against Huck.
