Why didn’t Danny Green go after Huck, Lebedev or Cunningham instead of Flores?

By Jim Slattengren: While I think Danny Green (30-3, 27 KO’s) is an excellent fighter, I’m not pleased to learn that he’s taking on BJ Flores (24-0-1, 15 KO’s) in his next fight on November 17th, in Sydney, Australia. That’s a step up for Green, no doubt. But that’s not a big enough step for me, especially after watching Green’s last fight against Paul Briggs.

The ending of that fight seemed like something from another era, and I don’t understand why Green selected Briggs to fight in the first place. It just makes me wonder whether Green is just looking for easy fights to milk his IBO cruiserweight title against instead of taking on more credible opponents like Denis Lebedev, Steve Cunningham or Marco Huck.

There’s a lot other guys I would rather see Green fighting than Flores, but I think Green would do well to start with Cunningham, Huck or Lebedev. I honestly don’t see Green ever fighting those guys, and that’s really a pity because it would be a great fight if he would step up and try and go after them. I’ve seen all five of Green’s fights since he made his comeback in 2009, and I can’t say I’ve been impressed by any of his opponents. Roy Jones Jr. obviously was a money fight for Green, but the other guys he’s been fighting are well beneath his talent level.

This isn’t interesting to see Green demolishing over-matched opposition every time out. He needs to go after some talented fighters before he hangs up his gloves. Flores has no power, moves around a lot and hasn’t done much with his career. He’s beaten everybody he’s fought, but then again he hasn’t fought anyone either. It’s going to be a fight where Green will be literally chasing Flores around the ring for 12 rounds, and that to me is really boring. I want to see Green fight someone good, but I don’t understand he’s not doing that.
